Tips & Tricks

Shooting at home is an opportunity not a handicap. It usually means that you are completely in control, so no worries about arguing with your crew or the talents <grin>. So be inspired and think of something that you can do either in the home or while out for a walk. We shall be discussing ideas on Wednesday, but here are a few thoughts to get your creative juices flowing, in no particular order:
  • Involve your spouse or any family member in the household, and by that I am including your pets too!
  • Try your hand at an Animation video. When I searched on "Animation" in the Apple App Store for iPads/iPhones, I got a heap of choices, many are free. Check with your usual software provider website or service. Search using "Animation" and "Stop Motion".
  • You can include exercising as location, such as parks or street
  • Go through some of your earlier footage and extract some clips and be creative
  • Pay closer attention to Sound Design. Look for royalty free sound bites downloads, or your own software library (GarageBand for instance, includes over 2,500 free audio loops!)
  • Make your own Foley recordings
  • Use your Smartphone or action camera like a GoPro, to capture shots from unusual angles
  • Experiment on camera movements, using your tripod or monopod, or even just sliding the camera on the tabletop sitting on top of a towel, which you can move gently by hand.
  • Learn something new to do either on your computer or with your existing gear
  • And lastly, if you are suffering from GAS (=Gear Acquisition Syndrome), then mail order something new and then do a simple review and send it to me for publication
For recording Foley, you can use practically any microphone as long as you have a way to capture the sound recording, either on an audio recorder, camera or even your Smartphone.

Below are 4 YouTube clips of under 2 minutes each(!) from my favourite mic maker, RØDE demonstrating different ways to use the VideoMic NTG - one of the most versatile in ingenious microphones to come onto the market recently.
