We are looking forward to another friendly gathering this Wednesday night (22nd Feb) as we welcome our third guest speaker this year!

He has won awards for Cinematography and Direction and his films have screened in hundreds of film festivals around the world.

As a Cinematographer, Dean shoots music videos, branded content and drama and owns an arsenal of production gear including the new RED Epic-W 8k Helium.

Doors Open 7pm

Members asked for more club-time this year, please make the most of it by arriving at 7pm.
You may bring your Camera if you want to show some of its features to your friends.

John Tsioulos will get you all involved in an audience participation exercise in the second half that will get you really going, all you need is your sense of play and a smile J

Teams:

As teams manager ,I have not been able to assign anyone in teams yet because only financial members have that privilege and last month, only half of the attendees remembered to pay the all-important annual fee.  Please pay your subs so that you can participate in the Teams and Comps!

Please remember to bring your cash or check with you on Wednesday as the committee does not have the luxury of calling our members individually to remind them again.

You have the option of paying on line right now:
You can pay your membership direct into our bank account:
Name: Sydney Video Makers Club
BSB: 032 - 090
A/c no.: 390 845

Note: $20 re-registration fee will apply for any payments after this Wednesday.

I do apologise for not issuing receipts last month due to our treasurer Lee having just returned from his overseas trip just before the Jan club night. He assures me that he will do so this Wednesday.
Kent has undertaken the task of printing name tags for every member who paid in January, you can pick yours at the door, Please wear it on every visit.

March Comp:

We have been reminding our members about the first film competition which will be screened, judged in house on the March club night, This year our friendly Competition  nights will be casual and fun.

I am advocating member-encouragement therefore the committee has removed the potential stress. No negativity will be allowed because we are a community with similar aspiration so feel confident that this committee wants all members to have an opinion!

Club Matters:

With two guest speakers last month we simply ran out of time to discuss some stuff. Have you thought of new name for the club? Eddie will canvas your opinions, Be ready on the 22nd.

I only received one phone call regarding the cancellation of Focus nights this year. I have already explained the reasons in my last email to members, Focus nights needed to be fresh, non-repetitive and offer something that you can’t get via Google.

Focus is dead as it requires  contribution from a wider base. Last year I did put a focus program together whereby the newer members themselves got up and gave us their own experiences which was great.. But we need that level of commitment every month which is not easy..
I have virtually replaced the need for focus nights some 10 years ago by introducing Team leaders  who are usually your mentors, You could argue that focus nights has been largely redundant for 10 years.
People shouldn’t expect the trio of Rob, Scotty and Paul to exclusively provide an unpaid lecture every month. If non-committee members feel like putting a presentation together than I will be very happy to give them that opportunity on club nights, which is what community clubs are about.

I am returning the club to its members Member’s, rather than ‘personalities’ by:
  1. Starting Club Nights at 7:pm to allow for more socalising time
  2. Competitions will be judged in-house with more member involvement
  3. Travel night will be held on May the 24th.
  4. I can’t encourage you enough to make a short film! Join a team, find us a guest speaker that you like, give us a talk yourself. What else is there in a community club? Give us your suggestions.
As you see, this year I have discouraged committee members making suggestions for you in order for you to have more of a say. A new president will be elected on September 27th and naturally he or she will have another welcomed change I hope. Life is all about movement.

Equipment:

Finally, There are two Audio Mixers in our lend-store that haven’t seen much use over the last couple of years.

These Items were popular when we purchased them a decade ago as it allowed a more accurate adjustment of Sound recording during filming. It was designed to connect into your camera.
The trend these days is to record the sound off camera with an external recorder. I will bring these two mixers to the club for you to determine whether we should sell the mixers and purchase a recorder instead.
Till then, keep your batteries charged !

See you this Wednesday.

Scripts, anyone?

You know, it is amazing what a few seconds' of internet search can dig up. I just "Googled" scripts for short films and found some worthwhile sites to explore. I am NOT going to list them here, because I want YOU to go to Google and do the search yourself! Then you can share what you've found at the Club Night.

Tech Corner

I love supporting Australian industry - so long as they produce worth while products. RØDE is one such company and most of us are familiar with their mics, indeed the club has a few in our lending library.

Recent addition to their range of products is the RØDELink Newsshooter Kit, comprising an XLR transmitter and a matching receiver.

The transmitter can be powered by either AA batteries or Sony Lithium batteries! Cool :)

Worth Reading

The Videomaker on-line magazine is always full of great articles. I can recommend the free subscription.
Here are links to a couple of recent articles:

  • MAGIX Software, German developer of media production software such as Fastcut, Music Maker and Xara Photo & Graphic Designer, today announced its acquisition of the majority of products in the Sony Creative Software portfolio. These include Vegas Pro, Movie Studio, Sound Forge Pro and ACID Pro. Sony Creative Software will continue to develop their recently introduced Catalyst Browse, Edit and Prepare post-production software.
