πŸ† GAME(S) OF THE YEAR πŸ†
STAFF PICKS

We asked a few BBI employees what their most memorable game of 2022 was. Here are their answers:

LANCE MUELLER - Game Director, Homeworld 3
"My game of the year is Elden Ring (co-op mod enabled). I had a blast playing with a friend and engaging with its big world and exciting combat!"

IAIN MYERS-SMITH - Lead Producer, Homeworld 3
"Age of Empires 4 is my game of the year (although it technically came out at the end of 2021). The intricate gameplay mechanics, vast array of units and civilizations, and the remarkable way historical elements are woven through single-player campaign make it a true strategy masterpiece."

LEE MCKINNON PEDERSON - Executive Producer, Minecraft: Legends
"My hottest game of 2022 is Pentiment. Located in a medieval Bavarian town called Tassing, this game has everything: a baron's bloody murder, light RPG elements, the far-reaching and chaotic consequences of interference, an art style based in 16th century illustrated manuscripts, meals of pottage and rye, the dawn of reformation, and a bricked up mystic nun."

PETER GAHN - Game Director, Minecraft: Legends
"For me, there is no question what the game of 2022 is: Total War: Warhammer 3, with a bullet. The Total War series has been my favourite game franchise since the original Shogun Total War was released in 2000. As a decades-long Warhammer fan as well, this game is basically perfect for me."

JESSICA KLYNE - Executive Producer, Hardspace: Shipbreaker
"It's not often I create Google Alerts for a game, but Stray was one I highly anticipated. I wasn't disappointed. Cats and sci-fi with stunning landscapes, thoughtful world-building, and delightful gameplay... need I say more?"

SEAN STOREY - Co-Game Director, Hardspace: Shipbreaker
"I really enjoyed playing Sifu, not just because I like martial arts movies, but mostly due to the really solid combat mechanics and well-balanced progression structure. It's an exceptionally well-designed combat game that has a clear focus on what it wants to achieve - and everything from the art style, audio design, to the haptics deliver on that premise."
FUN FACTS AND TRIVIA #3
Can you guess the significance of the markings on this meeting room in our studio? The first person to reply to this email with the complete answer will win a copy of the book 'Making Videogames: The Art of Creating Digital Worlds' - featuring Hardspace: Shipbreaker, Control, Half-Life: Alyx etc.

🎨 'A CHAT WITH ALISTAIR' πŸŽ¨
LIFE AT BBI

It's been snowing in Vancouver - which is reflected in real-time in the dynamic digital painting that adorns our office lobby!
'A Chat With Alistair' is a 15 feet tall 3D painterly digital rendering of a gothic New-England landscape in Unreal Engine, complete with its eponymous friendly resident corvid.

Thanks to the interactive display equipped with an array of sensors (for motion, audio, facial, and gesture recognition):
  • flora and fauna react as you'd expect to observers and things happening in the lobby

  • the actual time of day and real-world weather are reflected - from thunderstorms to northern lights or incendiary ash (should BC forest fires make a comeback 😬)

  • stars and constellations match the proper view alignment for the day and year

  • the murder of crows that actually flies over BBI at dawn and dusk every day appears in this world at the same time

  • repeat viewers and curious observers will be rewarded with many secrets: some things only happen at a certain time of day or year; other creatures are lurking in the corners etc.
Massive shout-out to our studio Cinematics Team who pioneered this side project 🀘
FUN FACTS AND TRIVIA #4
Minecraft Legends is powered by a heavily customized version of Bedrock, the same engine the original Minecraft game runs on.
