OBITUARY - Christoph Kühlewein

We received the sad news that Christoph Kühlewein passed away on May 11th in Freiburg.

Christoph was the Secretary-General of the European Federation of Young Choirs between 1976 and 1982. He was also a member of the association with his choirs for many years and was later appointed to the Music Commission of Europa Cantat and then became one of our advisors.

Christoph was a gentle and modest person, a passionate conductor and wonderful musician who was very inclusive and welcomed in his choirs anybody who wanted to join. He was also a promoter of cross-border friendship through choral singing with his French-German choir in Paris. I met him in 1976 as teacher and choir conductor at the German-French Gymnasium in Freiburg and had the privilege of singing in his school choir and later in his mixed choir Collegium Vocale which he often took to Paris for joined concerts with his choir there, as well as to Singing Weeks in Autun.

For me personally, he was also the one who introduced me to the work of the European Federation of Young Choirs which later became Europa Cantat and is now the European Choral Association. He took me to the Europa Cantat Festival in Namur in 1982 as a young volunteer and it is thanks to him that I am in my position today.

He shall not be forgotten and we will miss him in our European choral family.

Our condolences go to the family, his wife Gerda and his daughters Christina and Laura. If you wish to contact them, you can write to Familie Kühlewein, Sonnhalde 48, 79194 Gundelfingen.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday, May 24th at 11 am at the Waldfriedhof in Gundefingen.

Sonja Greiner, Secretary General

(under the label of the European Choral Association)

Jointly organised by Culture Action Europe, BOZAR, the European Cultural Foundation and De Balie in a hybrid format between Brussels and Amsterdam, the Europe Day 2022 celebration focused on giving the platform to communities around Europe that have taken part in the one-year long Amplify project, as well as to young artists from all over the continent and to cultural workers and activists from Ukraine. Guests had the possibility to exchange in a dedicated session with policy-makers from the three major EU Institutions. Read more here
