Can you remember a mistake - singing a wrong word or hearing a wrong word - in a choral concert that made you laugh?

There hardly is a rehearsal without intense laughing! But I precisely remember this one concert of the Chorus Viennensis where I and another first tenor colleague of mine couldn’t stop laughing for the next 10 minutes due to some pronunciation mistakes that involuntarily happened to the two of us in a row. The problem was that we were only 3 first tenors in the choir...

Reactions to the European Commission Communication on Strengthening European Identity through Education and Culture

On Friday the 17th November, European leaders met in Gothenburg to discuss the future role of education and culture in strengthening a shared European identity. The European Commission contributed to the meeting with the communication “Strengthening European Identity through Education and Culture”.

"Education and culture are the key to the future – both for the individual as well as for our Union as a whole. It is how we turn circumstance into opportunity, how we turn mirrors into windows and how we give roots to what it means to be 'European', in all its diversity. When Europe's leaders meet in Gothenburg this week, we must seize the opportunity and make sure education and culture are the drivers for job creation, economic growth, social fairness and ultimately unity."

Jean-Claude Junker | President of the European Commission

In reaction to this communication, the European Alliance for Culture and the Arts published a statement on November 17th 2017, also supported by ECA-EC, and the European culture network "Culture Action Europe", of which ECA-EC is a member, followed up with a more detailed position paper.

European Alliance for Culture and the Arts:

Whereas we recognise that the Commission highlights the role of culture in preserving and nurturing common values, and promoting a shared European identity, better understanding across borders and active citizenship, this is not fully reflected in the proposals for concrete future initiatives in the field of culture which are to be discussed with European Member States.
The Alliance calls on the Council to take an ambitious approach in the area of culture ahead of the European Council on 14-15 December 2017.
>> Read the full statement

Culture Action Europe:

"Following first analysis of the texts, we are dubitative due to a clear imbalance towards the for-profit-sector, also via the Guarantee facility. It would be a pity to miss an incredible chance for culture and the arts as a whole to impact our societies. Policies must call for widespread access to high-quality arts and culture as a foundation and driver for Europe.
