Discussion on the lack of youth representatives in politics
On 4 October MVC and YouthLab will be having an intimate and robust discussion around the lack of young people in positions of power in an event called the SA Youth Manifesto at The Wits Club, Johannesburg.
This discussion will prelude a book launch titled: The South African Youth Manifesto. This book, written by Youth Lab is based on national consultations with young people on the youth mandate to political parties contesting the 2019 elections. It shows the priorities of young South Africans, outline the South Africa they would like to live in, the interventions they would vote for in 2019 and the role they would like to play in our country beyond 2019.
A large part of our population is made up of youth but only a small margin get the opportunity to be in positions of power. According to an Inter-Parliamentary Union report, people aged between 20 and 44 make up 57% of the world’s voting age population but only 26% of the world’s MPs.
We have invited members from the ANC, DA, EFF and IFP to contribute to the interactive discussion.
MVC believes that young people have ideas and opinions regarding our political and electoral systems and should not be overlooked. They are our future leaders and should be given a chance to be heard in a constructive and inclusive environment.
