Dear BIKETOWN Members,
We are sad to inform you that we've had reports of widespread vandalism to the BIKETOWN system this morning.
We are actively retrieving damaged bikes and cleaning up stations, and working to get the system back to full speed as quickly as possible. We apologize that you might find stations empty of working bikes as you go about your travels today. We know some of you might be inclined to help our hard-working staff - one way to do so would be to ride a bike to an empty station! We thank you in advance for being a good citizen of BIKETOWN while our team is engaged in other duties.
This is especially sad because BIKETOWN has quickly become part of Portland’s civic infrastructure; in fact the stations are publicly owned. Further, BIKETOWN employs over a dozen of your fellow Portlanders, many of whom joined us from awesome organizations like Oregon Tradeswomen, A Social Ignition, MercyCorps Northwest, and SE Works. These acts of vandalism hurt people who want to use this public transit and the hardworking folks who keep it running 24/7/365.
If you have any tips as to who is behind this un-civic act please contact the Bike Theft Task Force at firstname.lastname@example.org.
And if you observe anyone defacing BIKETOWN bikes or stations please dial 911 right away.
The BIKETOWN Team
