We’ve been very busy at IITA – working on your behalf to address the many issues impacting inbound travel, like recent national parks issues that stand to make our nation’s treasures inaccessible to our clients. You can read more about this in this week’s article by our DC correspondent Steve Richer and watch your inbox for information as more details unfold.

In addition to addressing these issues head on, we’re working to educate the industry to be better prepared for international visitors with high quality service and strategic marketing to grow our global travel market share.

I hope you’ve seen our announcement about IITA’s new Inbound Insider - Steps to Success education program, which includes a series of seminars and workshops to train DMOs and suppliers on how to grow their international business and work with inbound operators.

The program will be presented by ALON Marketing Group, the country’s leading training and inbound marketing firm. The seminars/workshops will be tailored to your needs, from assessing your international readiness to product development and partnerships. You can offer one seminar/workshop or the series, as your budget allows. You can learn more details about this program in the article that follows.

You’ll hear more about this program and how it will benefit your destination during the IITA Summit in Portland, February 4-7. But don’t wait until Summit to reach out. If you’re interested in booking the program in 2018, please contact us now so you can schedule the dates you want.

Year-End Convergence of Legislative Activity Leaves a Lot of Unanswered Questions

By: Stephen B. Richer, DC Correspondent

It’s December and, as is usually the case, Congress has left significant matters for last-moment resolution in a mad rush to complete mandatory legislation before the new year.

Here are just some of the unanswered questions:

  1. Will significant increases, especially during peak season, be established for some of the most popular national parks?
  2. Will some units of the National Park Service see a reduction in size and new authorized uses?
  3. Will there be any meaningful appropriations to improve and maintain infrastructure within the public lands?
  4. Will funding for the Corporation for Travel Promotion, doing business as Brand USA, be eliminated?

All of these matters are on the table right now and are within either the recently passed House and Senate versions of the tax bill or proposed to be part of the continuing resolutions to fund the federal government.

Let’s take a quick look at each item, so inbound operators can be as prepared as possible to deal with them.

IITA Represented at U.S. - India Tour Operator Round Table

On November 16, 2017, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Travel and Tourism Office conducted a tour operator round table in New Delhi, India.  This was held in concert with India’s Ministry of Tourism as part of the 2017 U.S.-India Travel and Tourism Partnership Year.

The round table brought together key U.S. and Indian tour operator leaders to identify new opportunities and possible barriers to growing travel and tourism between the two countries.  Five U.S. tour operators and four Indian travel and tourism association representatives participated in a discussion focused on the United States and India as traveler source markets with significant upside potential. Prabha Raghava, Tours Limited, represented IITA at the event.

There was recognition that improved connectivity and ongoing economic growth provide positive conditions for further market development.  The need to connect private sector tour operators, both outbound and inbound, to accelerate business development was highlighted as a significant opportunity.
