The Barn has re-opened and over the next couple of months activities and clubs will be returning to offer a range of wellbeing, learning and community activities.

In addition to our usual programme will be an exciting new Thursday afternoon offering from UpStage Performing Arts which was established in 2001 to inspire young people and encourage self belief through performance. With a teaching team of West End performers UpStage offers professional classes for children and adults.  Check their site for details of the

"I have very much enjoyed coordinating the Get Together to Eat Together lunch club.  So I have always felt myself to be part of the team, as being part of my community is an essential part of life for me.  As a therapist and a cooking teacher, I am always looking for opportunities to bring people together and enhance well being through sharing good food with one another, building a sense of delicious community!"  More about community meals here

"I’ve always been an active supporter of The Barn, and as work and family commitments have changed I am pleased to have more time to become more involved. I work in healthcare and I’m interested in embracing the opportunities we have as a community to enable and support each others health and wellbeing across all ages"

Having worked in the voluntary sector all my life, I was thrilled to be asked by the Barn team to lead on the membership and volunteering role we’ve just created. Recent world events have shown us that there is a huge amount of goodwill in our communities. Watch this space for some interesting volunteer opportunities we are creating for our residents here in Westdene.

Friends of Westdene Green (The Barn) has been working with neighbours to respond to the needs emerging in their streets such as

  • Picking up food or prescriptions, posting and collecting mail from local shops
  • Help with using technology to contact friends or family
  • Having a regular telephone call with a neighbour to say hello and find out how you are

We have found over 120 local residents who are willing to look out for their neighbours.

Thoughts from Street Rep, Phil Grabsky:
"I congratulate the Friends of Westdene Green on all their efforts. The future is local, community, kindness – all three of which they have demonstrated.   It is the small acts of generosity that multiplied across villages, towns and cities will make a real difference to our ability to not only make it through this period of covid but actually to emerge stronger and better.
We live in what, at times, can be a very divided and divisive nation – and covid has the potential to accentuate that.  So to see folk checking on their neighbours, doing their shopping, taking medical staff a little gift of beer and crisps, whatever it was, is encouraging.  On the other hand, the danger was that this feeling would last only a few weeks and then we would all retreat in our cocoons, back to the old ways. Over the past few weeks perhaps people have started to ease off and become more self-centred once again.  The best information by far on covid is from ‘MD’ every fortnight in Private Eye and, as he makes very clear, whatever your age or ethnicity, we are all at risk and really don’t want to catch this.
So thinking about our local community is important. I was a bit surprised how few people took up the offer of help after we posted out the leaflets – at least as far as I can tell in my area – but at least they knew help was there if required. This is not over – don’t rely on someone else to be kind and considerate. Let’s all act like that." More from Street Reps here

Whilst The Barn was unable to host its normal array of gatherings, it has been far from inactive.  Since it was wrestled back into community hands by Friends of Westdene Green some 4 years ago, it has been providing a focal point for local people to come together, and Covid-19 has not got in the way of The Barn providing support network for local people to connect and engage with one another.
A local group of folk, who many of us will know, having enjoyed eating their delicious Indian cuisine at Westdene green festivities, from Calcutta Kiss were quick to step in. Wearing a number of different hats, they are also responsible for establishing Brighton Cauldron CIC who during Covid during times of need due to Covid19 are running a food hub for Black Asian & Minority Ethnic communities. Now The Barn has reopened, the hub has moved across the road to Ascension Church.More about this story here

We have seen Westdene Green giving space and relaxation to many more of us, particularly young cycle riders with families, during our social restrictions in the hot weather. So good.
The trees which were planted in March are all thriving, rowan “Olympic Flame” in the pic. just turning red. The original planting of berberis has benefitted from the improved light. We have completed the planting, so thanks to Katherine and friends “The Feminine Arboriculturalists” who put in hard work.
