Rooibos

This Heritage Month, an emotive video that shows the resilience and strength of Rooibos serves as a reminder of how brave and powerful we can be as a collective force during the pandemic. Through a collaboration with the SA Rooibos Council artist Anna Strelkova uses finely ground Rooibos tea leaves as a medium and a poignant message is illustrated in a three-minute video. The video is an immersive, nature-inspired installation that celebrates the strength of our natural heritage and the people of SA while also promoting social cohesion and a shared national identity. To tell us more about rooibos as well as the art created by Anna, we are joined via Skype by Adele Du Toit who is the spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council.
This powerful Heritage month video is an emotive, nature-inspired creation that celebrates the strength of our natural heritage and our people during the pandemic. It likens the humble, yet hardy Rooibos to the strength and resilience that lies within each and every South African (no matter where you are in the world).

Watch how Anna Strelkova, a talented animation artist, skilfully uses Rooibos tea as her medium to share a message of hope to all the people that make up our beautiful rainbow nation.

Kook met Rooibos

Rooibos, Garlic, Ginger Chicken
Ingredients:

1 kg chicken portions
1 cup rooibos tea (black, without sugar)
2 cloves garlic - chopped
1 tsp ginger - chopped
1 tsp salt
½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
4 tbsp tomato sauce

Method:

1. Put all the ingredients into your marinating container, excluding the chicken. Give a quick mix until combined and set aside.
2. Remove the skin from your chicken and cut two horizontal slits on each piece. This is to allow more flavour to permeate through the meat, even right to the bone.
3. Put the chicken pieces into the marinade. Ensure that the pieces are covered by the marinade.
4. Close the marinating container and marinate for at least 2 hours or even up to 24 hours.
5. When the marinating time has elapsed, remove the chicken from the marinade and place on an oven tray. Grill at 180°C for 45 min - 1 hour or until browned and cooked through.

What does this mean?
* Social, religious and other gatherings are permitted provided they also abide by the following conditions.
* The number of people in any venue must not exceed 50% of its normal capacity.
* A limit of 250 people applies to indoor gatherings.
* A maximum limit of 500 people applies to outdoor gatherings.
* Masks must be worn at all times and social distancing must be maintained.
* The curfew time will be from midnight until 4 am.
* The easing of restrictions on alcohol sales under Level 1 must be done cautiously and responsibly to prevent harm to public health. On-site consumption in licensed establishments is allowed, with strict adherence to the curfew (midnight).
* Sale of alcohol at retail outlets is permitted from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
* International travellers will be allowed upon the meeting of certain requirements.
