EU MSCA-ETN DEMETER
Newsletter #2 - May 2016
REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR DEMETER SUMMER SCHOOL

On 24-26 August 2016 a unique Summer School will take place in Leuven, Belgium. The aim of this Summer School is to bring PhD students and postdocs together to learn and discuss about the “Design and Recycling of Rare-Earth Permanent Magnet Motors and Generators in Hybrid and Full Electric Vehicles“. The summer school consists of 12 comprehensive lectures, which are provided by world class experts from both industry and academia. The DEMETER Summer School is co-organised by the EU H2020 project REMAGHIC, the  RARE3 KU Leuven Cluster and the Arenberg Doctoral School. Registration is now open and can be done here.

ABOUT MSCA-ETN DEMETER
Presenting... MSCA-ETN DEMETER
DEMETER is the European Training Network for the Design and Recycling of Rare-Earth Permanent Magnet Motors and Generators in Hybrid and Full Electric Vehicles ((H)EVs). In this project 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) are trained by a leading consortium of universities, research institutes and manufacturers. DEMETER develops innovative, eco-friendly solutions for both (H)EVs that are already on the market and for the (H)EVs of the future.
NEW PROJECTS
EU H2020 REE4EU
REE4EU, which stands for Integrated high temperature electrolysis (HTE) and Ion Liquid Extraction (ILE) for a strong and independent European Rare Earth Elements Supply Chain, is a new project funded through Horizon 2020 SPIRE-07-2015. REE4EU, coordinated by SINTEF, targets, for the first time at industrial scale, an efficient and cost effective method of extraction and a direct production route for Rare Earth Alloys.
NEW PAPERS
New papers on NdFeB magnets
R.S. Sheridan, et al., The development of microstructure during hydrogenation - disproportionation - desorption - recombination treatment of sintered neodymium-iron-boron-type magnets, Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 401, 2016, 455-462.

J.P. Meakin, et al., 3-D laser confocal microscopy study of the oxidation of NdFeB magnets in atmospheric conditions, Applied Surface Science, 378, 2016, 540–544.
POLICY BRIEF
Policy Brief on ERECON Report
DEMETER’s twin project, EU FP7 MC-ITN EREAN, recently published a milestone Policy Brief with respect to the recycling recommendations published in the final report of the European Rare Earths Competency Network (ERECON). The discussion in this Policy Brief is also vital for the DEMETER project, as DEMETER focuses on both NdFeB and SmCo permanent magnets in automotive applications.
CALL FOR PAPERS - JOURNAL OF SUSTAINABLE METALLURGY
Special Issue on green rare earth production
The Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy (JSM) is now seeking manuscripts for a thematic collection on the topic of rare earths. Accepted papers would be published in 2016. Authors interested in submitting to this collection should contact Guest Editor Prof. Bernd Friedrich, RWTH Aachen University, directly at bfriedrich@ime-aachen.de. More info here.
