EU MSCA-ETN DEMETER
Newsletter #4 - December 2016
DEMETER VIDEO HIGHLIGHTED AS BEST PRACTICE DURING YEARLY EC MSCA-ITN COORDINATOR DAY, 12-12-2016)

During the yearly Marie Sklodowska-Curie Horizon 2020 ITN coordinators information day organised by the European Commission in Brussels (12-12-2016), the promotional video of ETN DEMETER (launched September 2016) was presented as the example of successful communication and outreach. The ETN DEMETER video shows a perfect example on how the various projects under the H2020 programe can attract more attention. The DEMETER video, featuring Early Stage Researcher Gwen Bailey (KU Leuven), was made in collaboration with Storyrunner. The video was viewed more than 10,000 times in the first week after being launched (combined on Vimeo and KU Leuven's Facebook page). It covers the challenging area of the design and recycling of the rare-earth permanent magnet motors used in hybrid and electric vehicles (HEVs).

ABOUT MSCA-ETN DEMETER
Presenting... MSCA-ETN DEMETER
DEMETER is the European Training Network for the Design and Recycling of Rare-Earth Permanent Magnet Motors and Generators in Hybrid and Full Electric Vehicles ((H)EVs). In this project 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) are trained by a leading consortium of universities, research institutes and manufacturers. DEMETER develops innovative, eco-friendly solutions for both (H)EVs that are already on the market and for the (H)EVs of the future.

NEW PROJECTS
EU H2020 PLATIRUS
PLATIRUS is a new EU Horizon 2020 project (GA 730224), which aims at reducing the EU deficit of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). PGMs are classified by the European Commission as critical raw materials (CRM), as they combine a high economic importance with a high risk associated with their supply. PLATIRUS targets a miniaturised PGMs recovery process. Input secondary raw materials are autocatalysts, electronic waste (WEEE) and tailings & slags from nickel and copper smelters. KU Leuven and VITO are core partners in this project, which is coordinated by Tecnalia. Read PLATIRUS press release here
OPEN ACCESS
A handy guide to Open Access
Since the launch of Horizon 2020 the EC has been highlighting the importance of Open Access publishing. Open Access publishing implies that all peer-reviewed scientific publications resulting from a Horizon 2020 project should be deposited in open-access repositories. The DEMETER Coordinator, SIM² KU Leuven, developed a step-by-step Open Access flow diagram that can be used by all partners who are involved in Horizon 2020 projects.

CALL FOR PAPERS
ERES 2017 (Deadline for abstracts: 15-1-17)
Following the success of ERES 2014 and under the framework of the EU FP7 EURARE project and the EU FP7 MC-ITN EREAN training network, the 2nd European Rare Earth Resources conference is held in 2017 in Santorini, Greece. The conference includes both oral presentations and intensified poster presentations. Abstracts should be between 500 and 1000 words. Abstracts accepted will be published in the ‘ERES2017 Book of abstracts’. Authors with abstracts accepted for oral presentations, will have the option to publish full papers, after review, to the Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy or the Johnson Matthey Technology Review.
DEMETER POLICY BRIEF (IV)
Policy Brief on need for continued CRM research
The General Coordinator of ETN DEMETER was invited to give a talk at the “Critical Raw Materials in Everyday Applications” workshop in Brussels on September 26-27, 2016. This Policy Workshop was organised to bring Critical Raw Materials experts in contact with EU Policy Makers. Prof. Binnemans provided a clear Policy Brief message to the EU Policy Makers, concerning the need for a concerted effort for continued CRM research. This message can be read in the publicly available presentation. Download here.
