LWVCC 2016 Making Democracy Work Awards  at Annual Dinner 


The MDWA Committee has selected Salida residents Katy Grether and Donna Rhoads for their service to the county.  The LWVCC MDWA is given to recognize and honor a person or person who has been a leader and actively engaged in the hands-on work to keep Chaffee County a strong, fair and vibrant place to live and has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to making democracy work. There were six people nominated this year.  Thank you Cheryl Brown-Kovacic, Karen Robinson and Diane Lively for you work on the committee. 

 

The Sister Act

Katy Grether and Donna Rhoads have worked tirelessly for a number of non-profits in the County. Here is a sampling of their work. 

Katy focused her efforts on numerous heritage preservation groups, including the Chaffee County Heritage Area Advisory Board,  Historic Salida, Inc. and Hutchinson Homestead and serves a board member for Starpoint. 

Donna formed Salida Parks, Open-space and Trails (SPOT) and worked closely with GARNA, Salida Mountain Trails & Four-Mile. She wrote grants for the new Visitor Center and worked with the Upper Arkansas Land Trust, GARNA and has served on the FiBARK Committee.

We welcome new member Cory Franklin. Cory and her husband recently moved here from the Santa Fe area and are building a home in Game Trail. 



 



Things to do this month...


___1. Check out the video. The 10 members who attended the March meeting on the issues of running a marijuana  business found it very interesting.  You can view it on our website lwvchaffeecounty.org.  

___2. Remember to buy and sell those geraniums. This is a key fund raiser for LWVCC. Get your order form here.  

___3. Make a list of issues you think we need to study for next year?

The Hospital Forum is next Monday at the Salida City Chambers. See the ad at the beginning of the eVoter.

May 3, Polling places are the Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in Salida and the American Legion on 338 North Railroad St., BV. 

The Poncha Springs Candidates Forum was well attended with 20 people  present.

70+ people attended the  forum on the pro and con issues for retail mariljana stores on the BV ballot for April 5. 

Thank you, Scott Hartman for organizing these important forums. In addition to Scott, the following members have helped or will be at Monday's forum: Mary Helen Dunn, Jan Scar, Myra Barrett, Marjie Gray, Jeanne Younghaus, Gail Brooks, Melissa Smith,  Bob Sanders, Linda Mulka, Carol Sanford, Bob Gray, Bob Box, Marilyn Box, Diane Lively, Jacki Sobczak, Karen Dils and Rose Mirich. Several members have helped at all three. If you want to be a part of the Voter Service Committee, please let Scott know.
