A Personal Note from Dan Andrews

One of the top five regrets of the dying is "I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected from me." How are you living to not fall into this same regret?

When learning about these five regrets of the dying from the hospice worker and author, Bronnie Ware, my life changed because I adopted habits to combat each of the five regrets.

Since this previously mentioned regret hit me the hardest, please allow me to share some of my strategies to hopefully help you.

Define Your Own Mission & Vision Statements

  • Create these two mantras to define what's important to you. Your personal Mission Statement identifies how you want to carry yourself in the world. Your personal Vision Statement reminds you what you want to accomplish in your life.
  • I encourage clients to create these phrases at the beginning of our business relationships.
    • At the start of each meeting, we go over these statements so the client remembers these phrases as well as to remind me of what's important to the client so I can give appropriate guidance.
  • And to practice what I preach, here are my current statements:
    • Dan's Personal Mission: Live with enthusiasm, cultivate self-confidence, and enjoy my journey. Add value to others. Love my families. Provide friendship towards companions. Use guidance, encouragement, and technical know-how as main working tools. Give compassion towards self and others. Be the type of person I want to meet.
    • Dan's Personal Vision: Impact communities by encouraging individuals to define their own paths, handle their responsibilities, and to give back while on their journeys.

Focus on What You Want to Improve and How You're Going to Grow

  • The familiar feels comfortable which is why this regret of the dying exists. But remember, new experiences are calling your name! You only need to position yourself - mentally, spiritually, and physically - to find these new opportunities.
    • Expand your horizons by learning new subjects, networking with new people, and live life a little different. Leverage this tool to help you simplify the process: What Will You Compound?

Start Adopting Habits Now... Not Later

  • John Lennon has the great quote, "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans."
  • So what are you going to do to define your own path?
    • A friendly challenge: write down what you'll start doing today and have fun getting started!

Financial Tip of the Month

Topic: Your Investment Personality

Money makes people act quirky, eh?! The field of Behavioral Finance continues to gain recognition because economists are realizing that people make irrational decisions when it comes to money. As Richard Thaler, a recent Nobel Prize winning economist, says, "it's not that people are dumb, its because the world is hard."

An action where people consistently hurt their financial futures is to sell their investments (in IRAs, 401(k)s, and in other accounts with exposure to the stock markets) when the big swings happen in the global markets.

For example, the people who sold their positions when things got scary in 2008 missed the rebound in 2009. The Total Stock Market Index Vanguard ETF (VTI) lost 38.35% in 2008, Yet, in 2009, the same position gained 25.99%. Many people sat on the sidelines in cash rather than being invested in a good year for the stock market.

Understanding your Investment style and also your investment composure are necessary foundations to building an appropriate money strategy. I recently partnered with DataPoints so we can help clients understand their own behaviors when it comes to money and how to improve the habits which can build wealth.

We are in the process of implementing this new software with our clients but here's an opportunity for you to see your own Investment Personality!
