                            SPRING INTO SPRING!
The first blossoms are always surprising. They arrive in the full-blown Californian winter of dark, rainy days when the tule fog makes a dismal tunnel of the landscape.  Unexpectedly the blossoms appear - first in Berkeley (of course!) then here. Showy pink and white lining the road, heralding transition. The conscientious haul out lawnmowers and pride themselves that the pruning is already done. It must be nice to be a peach or plum tree, knowing just when the frost is over and the air is right to put out blossoms.  Yesterday I saw my first daffodils. They were full-blown, bursting with joy. “Miracle” hardly describes them. I stood with my unwieldy knapsack weighing me down, overcome by the light of spring.

On a trip to Ireland, before the advent of organized campsites, we stopped at farms, asking permission to camp on their land. Even the poorest farmer gifted us with eggs, milk, home-made cheeses and the inevitable cup of tea. “Where shall we camp?” we asked. “Over there, the farmer replied, waving us towards a nearby field. “But it’s full of daffodils,” we protested, “we’ll ruin your field.” The farmer hoisted a casual shoulder, “Just weeds, they are, no bother, enjoy your stay on our land.”

Your precious words, the unique pages of your writing, weeds they are not, but daffodils!
