Welcome to our 2016 sailing school instructors!

Meet Grant, our 2016 Sail Parry Sound Sailing School Head Instructor and Program Manager (top left):

This year I have the privilege of leading the Sail Parry Sound team as head instructor. I remember when I started sailing on Georgian Bay when I was 9 years old at Sail Parry Sound, the friends I made then I hold dearly today and the passion I cultivated for sailing still burns bright in my life.

In the beginning the Race team served as my role model as I was able to witness firsthand the hard work and dedication the athletes put into the sport.  As I grew older and refined my skills I earned a spot on the team and fondly remember the summers training on the Bay and travelling around the province to race against Ontario’s best. This year I was able to continue my love for sailing by competing on the Queens Varsity Sailing Team, while attending Queens for Commerce.  I hope I am able to take what I learned working with Olympic coaches this year and bring it to Sail Parry Sound in order to raise the bar of coaching excellence.

My time at Sail Parry Sound has changed my life and my goal this summer is to ensure the majesty of the Bay continues to change the lives of people through sailing.

Jake (top right):
I am very excited to instruct at Sail Parry Sound this year. I always have a great time here and overall the school just gives off a fantastic and fun vibe. Ever since I was serious about sailing I had a tremendous urge to become a sailing instructor and give kids the same experience I had when I was first introduced to sailing. I have been sailing since I was 12 and enjoy it every year I come back, I still look forward to coming to Sail Parry Sound, meeting new people and, participating in regattas. My favourite part about Sail Parry Sound other than the sailing is making new friends and creating a bond with the other athletes.

Jacob (bottom left):
Hi my name is Jacob and I have been sailing for 10 years now and it is a sport and hobby that I really enjoy if not my favourite! After many years of great instructors motivating me to become a better sailor, I look forward to instructing and inspiring students to become the best sailors they can be.

Curtis (bottom right):
I have been learning to sail at  SPS since I was seven years old.  What has kept me coming back for ten years now is my love for the sport, the fun environment at SPS , the great friends I have made there and the wonderful staff.

I've volunteered for several seasons and enjoyed being part of the SPS Race Team last year. This summer I am excited to be working full time, teaching the greatest summer sport on the planet. I look forward to sharing knowledge and skills with both new and improving sailors. From the CANsail program, and teen fast start, to adult lessons, its always a good time to pick up a new, possibly lifelong, summer hobby.

I am looking forward to seeing old and new faces this upcoming summer and hope to make 2016 the best summer yet at SPS!

Also welcome back to Stephen and Meredith who will be helping out at sailing school throughout the summer!
You are invited to attend this year’s Splash in the Sound event celebrating our new waterfront destination in conjunction with our annual Get out on the Water day on July 9th from 10am to 4pm.  To register for the event click here.

On July 9th starting at 10am, try keelboat or dinghy sailing (with an experienced sailor) stand up boarding or kayaking (offered by White Squall). Bring your PFD and get ready to enjoy a fun filled day on the Big Sound! In the afternoon from 2:30 onwards, enjoy a live performance by renowned Parry Sound-born singer/songwriter Katherine Wheatley, whose love of the water is inspired by the beauty of Georgian Bay! Acoustic roots with catchy melodies, arresting vocals, great guitar playing, lyrics that get you and that you get - these are all things that have been written over and over again about Katherine Wheatley’s music. She sings truth, bravely, and in detail.  What could be better than enjoying the afternoon with Katherine while her beautiful voice echoes over the water!  If you have friends who would like to try sailing, bring them along! Everyone is welcome!

So much is new this year at Sail Parry Sound with the addition of a new café and additional on site recreational activities. The Country Gourmet Café on the Upper Deck at Sail Parry Sound opened in May and is offering fresh foods with a panoramic view of the Big Sound. White Squall offers professional instruction, kayak and paddle board training as well as free paddling and demonstrations. To top it off, Parry Sound Bikes will be scheduling a Tour the Town Bike Experience bringing their cycling tours right to Sail Parry Sound, to enjoy our beautiful place on the shore.
