Hi <<First Name>>,

With back-to-school just around the corner, we wanted to pass along a few tips for ensuring your child has a healthy smile this school year:
  • Make dental hygiene a priority in your child's school day: We know that over the summer, sometimes dental hygiene falls by the wayside. That's why it's important to start re-establishing a good dental hygiene schedule with your child. Ensure they brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste and floss every morning and evening. If you have older children, encourage them to model good teeth hygiene for their younger siblings.
  • Pick up a new toothbrush: Add a new toothbrush and toothpaste to their back-to-school shopping list so they have a fresh supply that might encourage them to brush with a bit more enthusiasm. Consider getting a few extra just in case they get sick.
  • Plan healthy snacks: When packing lunches, choose healthy snacks and lunches. Include grains, milk, cheese, raw vegetables, yogurt, or fruit. This will help them avoid consuming too many sugary snacks that promote tooth decay. Avoid sticky snacks like dried fruit and rollups, as these are just as bad for your child's teeth as candy.
  • Make sure their water bottle is full:  Avoid sugary fruit juice boxes and, instead, send your child to school with a water bottle full of fresh water. Encourage them to refill it at the school's water fountain when it's empty.

If your child has braces, ensure they know how to care for their teeth at school. Provide them with a toothbrush to clean their teeth and appliances properly after lunch or snack time.

And, if your child will be participating in school sports, make sure to discuss getting a customized mouthguard with our team at their back-to-school exam. It is always important to protect their teeth, especially for contact sports like hockey and football.

Are you looking for some teeth-friendly school lunch ideas for your kids?

Here are a delicious ideas to get you started:
  • Lettuce Wraps with Cheese: Leafy greens and cheese are excellent for your teeth.
  • Veggies with Hummus: Crunchy foods like carrots and celery can remove plaque and bacteria with each bite. Not to mention they are full of vitamins and minerals like vitamin A and phosphorus, which are great for teeth.
  • Black Bean and Rice Burgers: These burgers are rich in phosphorus and vitamin B3, making them perfect for teeth and gums.
  • Yogurt with Berries and Nuts: Yogurt is full of calcium, which is great for oral health. Plain Greek yogurt is ideal since flavoured yogurts are often loaded with sugar and other unpleasant chemicals. Add some tooth-friendly fruits like strawberries and blueberries and crunchy chopped nuts like almonds for your little one to mix in.
  • Broccoli and Cheese Soup: A warm and delicious broccoli and cheese soup is a great pick-me-up when the weather starts to get chillier. Making a big batch of homemade soup will last you a few lunches if you’re pressed for time and will also help you avoid the high levels of sodium and preservatives found in store-bought soups.
