Spring 2020
Director's Message
Congratulations to Georgia Southern as we enter our 9th year on Princeton Review's list of Green Colleges. Studies show that  students consider the sustainability record of a university in their college choice, so our sustainability efforts are not only good for the planet, they are also good for our enrollment!

We will kick off RecycleMania the first week of February with a waste & recycling audit in 4 campus buildings. This will help us to evaluate what has been thrown away that could be recycled, and what is in recycling bins that is really trash. Drop by the Williams Center Patio 11am -1pm February 4 to see the trash mountain and help sort the waste. We will share the results, encourage proper disposal of recycling and waste during the 8 weeks of RecycleMania, and then re-evaluate our waste stream on March 31. Please 'Think Outside the Trash' and help Georgia Southern reduce its impact!

We encourage you to enjoy an active spring semester of CfS events and programs for the Statesboro campus, free of charge. We hope to see you at our many events this spring!

- Dr. Lissa Leege, Director

RecycleMania: February 2 - March 28th
What is RecycleMania?
A competition between universities throughout the US and Canada to see who can recycle the most.

What can be recycled?
Paper, aluminum, narrow necked plastic bottles (#1 and #2) and cardboard in any of the marked bins across our campuses.

Keep in mind...
Contamination lowers our chances of winning so let's make sure to sort each material properly.
We'll kick off RecycleMania with a waste and recycling audit of Math/Physics, Natural Sciences, Williams Center and Russell Union. Stop by and see us!
Get "Caught Green-Handed" during RecycleMania! If you are seen recycling or otherwise being green, you will be entered into a drawing for prizes from the University Tech Corner. Learn how to participate here.
Arbor Day
Come plant some trees and celebrate their value on Statesboro's campus!
Environmental Community Cinema
Movie Night! The public is invited free of charge, and attendance verification is always provided if needed.

After School Garden Program
The After School Garden Program (ASGP) educates children in the five local elementary schools about gardening, basic plant biology, ecosystems, and nutrition.

In Fall of 2019, students from Statesboro elementary schools grew kale, cauliflower, and radishes. For Spring 2020, the students will be planting spinach, beets, and introducing an herb/native plant garden!
Summer Internship
SSi Shanghai invites students of all academic majors and backgrounds, both bachelor and graduate level, to join them in Shanghai for 10 weeks in summer 2020 who are looking to gain international work experience as well as leadership skills in sustainability and business.
Alongside a full-time internship related to their academic background and major, they will develop an extensive understanding as well as practical industry experience of the intersection between sustainability, business, and leadership. Key topics include a leadership mindset, achieving results through others, collaborating and influencing, getting things done and driving change.

There are also homestay options allowing students to completely cut out the cost of accommodation during your time in Shanghai, as well as most meals provided. An amazing and affordable opportunity for students! Private rooms in shared apartments are also available for an extra fee of $1600 USD for 10 weeks. Furthermore, they understand the burden of cost to students. They are offering a $305 USD scholarship discount to Georgia Southern University students who apply before January 31st, bringing the total cost of the program down to $3195 USD.
