OMA Summit: Getting From Now to the Future
More than 85 OMA Chairs representing Sections, Districts, MIGs and Fora joined the Board on Saturday February 23 for a frank discussion about the future of our organization and the future of our profession.
The health care system is changing and the OMA is changing. Together, we need to be aligned in purpose, to strengthen our voice and influence as leaders in the system and to drive our OMA to perform at the highest level.
Key takeaways:
- Health transformation: the Ministry has confirmed it wants to work with the OMA to transform health care.
- Health care funding: topics discussed included sustainability, stewardship, alternative funding and hybrid health systems – what does the future hold, and how will the OMA play a role in influencing future funding models?
- The arbitration award: discussion reviewed what Phase I and Phase II look like — given how contentious relativity has been, how do we move forward, together as the OMA?
- Minority Sections: we need to do more to provide support and voice to all physician groups, big and small; question is how?
- OMA governance: the Chairs wanted clarity on who makes what decisions — how do we bring clarity to the role and authority of the Board, Council, CEO, and Executive Committee?
The OMA is compiling the feedback from our breakout groups and input from leaders into an action plan that will help shape our priorities going forward. I’ll share the full report and recommendations when it’s complete. The agenda and prep materials for the meeting are online here.
Health System Legislation
The media reported today that the government plans to introduce legislation on health system transformation tomorrow. This legislation would create 1) a new Super Agency for health system oversight, and 2) Integrated Care Delivery Systems for regionalized, accountable care delivery. This has the potential to be a dramatic change in how health care is delivered in Ontario; I will update members once we have more information.
