Dear friends,
On September 30, Seed the Commons held the first counter-celebration to World School Milk Day. Since its launch 18 years ago, this was the first time that WSMD was opposed or that an event was organized specifically around the problems with school milk. Speakers included a family physician, a schoolteacher, community organizers, vegan moms and health and nutrition educators – they all made it clear that mandatory school milk exacerbates health inequity in the Bay Area and they discussed the need for school meal policies that serve children, not the dairy industry.
And indeed, Seed the Commons also launched a campaign to #GetMilkOut of San Francisco public school meals. On September 27, our Thunderclap campaign reached up to 364k people with its call to #GetMilkOut. At our counter-celebration, we gathered signatures for our petition to the San Francisco Board of Education and we were delighted to find that most passersby supported it. We will continue to build awareness around school milk by working with community and parent groups in San Francisco throughout 2018.
This campaign is a powerful way to claim our right to decide on policies that affect us and to wrest this power from the dairy industry and federal agencies. This same philosophy is behind the upcoming People’s Harvest Forum. This year, we will focus on "resources" – from resources that multinationals usurp and monopolize to resources that communities can mobilize, defend and reclaim. We will discuss land, seeds, and labor... but also policy as a commons, cities as a resource, and reclaiming history and knowledge.

Please RSVP to the forum, invite your friends, and support our efforts; we are a small, all-volunteer organization and any donation makes a difference.
