2022 is the 60th playing of this annual competition, which is open to all low handicap golfers in the Chronicle distribution area, is primarily a scratch competition, with a handicap competition included to maintain the interest of the players struggling to play to par and better. The 36 holes event is played at Astbury Golf Club and Congleton Golf Club with the order of play rotating between the clubs.
This year Congleton Golf Club hosted the morning round with 26 players teeing off on a course that has benefitted from a lot of hard work courtesy of the new greens team lead by Nick Worrall.
Congleton Golf Club and Alfie Oakes with a six inch put for a two on the tricky 12th.
Leading at the half way point were Tom Johnson Alfie Oakes and George Mitchell with scores of 69, 70 and 72.
Transferring to the Astbury course for afternoon round the players were welcomed to a course that had hosted the Cheshire Matchplay Competition in May as part of its Centenary Celebrations. Also in great condition thanks to Andy Brougham and his team, the course encouraged golf of the highest standard. Overall winner was Tom Johnson with a comfortable lead at the 36th hole scoring a gross 139. In second place with a score of 146 was Alfie Oakes scoring 146 and in third place was Harry Griffiths with 147. In the AM handicap competition a score of a net 69 by Harry Gittens picked up the top prize with Mick Leese also on a net 69 coming second on a card playoff. In the PM competition Richard Griffiths won with a net 70 and Michael Hehir was second with a net 74
The Chronicle Cup came about in1962 following a significant meeting between Les Emmett, H. Brown, W.L. Head and D.B. Murray to discuss the formation of a new scratch competition. The idea behind the event was that it should be a 36 holes with 18 played at Astbury and a further 18 played at Congleton. The event would be known as the Chronicle Cup with the trophy presented by the Chronicle. The inaugural event was played on the 20th May 1962 and the first winner was a Mr John Leonard of Astbury GC.
