This Week at the Museum

Welcome our new permanent exhibition . . .

Spirits: African and Oceanic Art from the Dr. Alan and Linda Rich Collection

Just over a year ago, the Polk Museum of Art welcomed visitors to its original exhibition “Spirits: Ritual and Ceremonial African and Oceanic Art from the Dr. Alan and Linda Rich Collection,” a full-scale show that displayed one-of-kind, artisan-made ritual and ceremonial art objects collected from across Africa and Papua New Guinea and generously lent by Lakeland locals Dr. Alan and Linda Rich. Following the success of the 2019 exhibition and their experience working with the Museum to present the show, the Riches gifted their extensive collection to be displayed permanently in a dedicated gallery space at the Museum.

The newly renovated gallery contains objects from over nine different countries including a unique collection of objects that were often used for practical or ceremonial purposes and interwoven deeply into the cultures and spiritual practices of the individuals who created them. The gallery also tells the multi-decade story of the Riches and their philanthropic medical care trips. The primary purpose of each trip was medical care, namely performing eye surgery for the blind (often the result of cataracts) and disfigured (often from cancers or crossed-eyes). Along the way, the Riches grew their collection and gained a better understanding of each respective culture by means of its art.

The Spirits gallery is now open and available for viewing! Come in today to experience the incredible narrative of the Riches' medical journeys, view the extensive collection, and learn about how the cultures of the objects' artisans are inextricable from the objects themselves.
