Sigma Kappa Semester ReKap Newsletter

Alpha Tau • Semester ReKap 2019

Happy Holidays, sisters!  I hope these past few months have been fun and eventful, just like it has been for all of us here at Alpha Tau.  As our semester is coming to an end, we are all preparing for final exams and excited to head home for the holidays, allowing us to spend time with our families, recoup from classes, and look forward to a new semester and a year full of sisterhood.
What Are You Thankful For?
The holidays are always the perfect opportunity to set aside some time to appreciate all that we have, and also give back to the community.  Alpha Tau's outgoing Vice President of Philanthropic Services, Cameron Lahoud, can confidently speak on this, given the amount of charitable effort she's put towards not only Sigma Kappa's philanthropies, but the East Lansing and Greek Life community as a whole.  Below are some of our year-end numbers thanks to Cameron, to recognize our hard work this year, and to remind us the importance of giving back.
Total Service Hours: 4,400
This year, Alpha Tau made a substantial difference in our service hours.  From assisting with food banks and nursing homes, attending other Greek organizations' philanthropy events, participating in unpaid internships, and many more, we've set the bar high for ourselves for years to come, motivating us even more to give back to our community.

Total Amount Raised for the Alzheimer's Walk: $16,602
Alpha Tau's initial goal for this year's Alzheimer's fundraiser was $15,000, so to exceed that by $1,602, (and $6,602 from last year's amount) was an incredible accomplishment.  In order to exceed this amazing goal this year, Cameron explained that she continuously encouraged the members to create fundraisers through Facebook and spread the awareness of this disease.
Sigma Kappa's Deserved Recognition at the 2019 Greek Gala Awards
The Annual Michigan State Greek Gala Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, November 21st at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, and President Amanda Poole, Vice President of Standards & Values Lindsey Aranguren, Vice President of Programming Darby Mroz, and Vice President of Alumnae Relations Annabel Fagan attended to represent Sigma Kappa.
We are proud to say that the Alpha Tau Chapter of Sigma Kappa was recognized for two awards at the Greek Gala.  The first award was for Membership & Leadership Development, which recognizes our chapter's strong new membership program as well as membership education program.  We also accepted the Greek Ivy award on behalf of Cameron Lahoud, Vice President of Philanthropic Services, which recognizes the strides she has made towards the improvement of Greek Life overall, as well as being an outstanding East Lansing community member.
Alpha Tau's Founders' Day 2019 Celebration
On Sunday, November 10th, the Alpha Tau chapter was happy to host Sigma Kappa's Founders' Day celebration at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing to recognize the significance and lives of our amazing founders.  This also happened to fall on the same day that the young women of the New Member Class of 2019 were initiated, making the day even more special.  See below for some of the photos from the event. Alpha Tau Alumna, Jenna Kennedy Gives Enlightening Sisterhood Program
On Sunday, October 20th, Jenna Kennedy of New Member Class 2007, came and spoke to the Alpha Tau Chapter at our fall Sisterhood retreat.  Jenna spoke on overall self-image and confidence within the workplace, as well as organizations like Sigma Kappa, while also including several interactive elements for us.  Her engaging demeanor, contagious confidence, and captivating messages resonated with all the women at the event, leaving an empowering energy in the group for the remainder of the retreat.  See below for some pictures from Jenna's program.
Sigma Kappa Annual Ultraviolet Event 2019
On Friday, November 22nd, Alpha Tau had their annual Ultra Violet Philanthropy event, designed to raise money for the Sigma Kappa Foundation PULSE fund.  This year, VP of Philanthropic Services, Cameron Lahoud organized a dodge-ball tournament for members to put together and coach teams among various fraternities.  The tournament was a huge success and everyone involved had a great time.  Find out more about what goes into the PULSE fund here, and see below for some photos from the event.
