Oxford Elementary Student
Makes Important Contribution to
Spaulding and Community
Sometimes a child will set the example adults should follow. Case in point: Helping others requires more than thoughts and prayers. It takes action.

Taryn is a third-grade student at Oxford Elementary School in Oxford, Mich., who learned about Spaulding for Children while researching a school project about adoption.

“At our school we do this project called ‘Exhibition,’” Taryn said. “Exhibition is when you research a topic you care about. My topic was adoption. I spent weeks researching adoption. I made a poster board about adoption.”

In addition to learning all she could about children in adoptive and foster care, she discovered how she could make a real difference. So, Taryn collected items for Spaulding families.

“At our school, we also had to take action about our topic,” Taryn said. “For my action, I made flyers and handed them out around my school and neighborhood. The donations I was asking for were gift bags, tissue paper, and unused cards. I picked those items because Spaulding for Children already has a lot of toys, just not a lot of gift bags or cards or tissue paper to make the gift special! I hope this helps Spaulding for Children.”

As readers know, horrific violence befell Oxford, Mich., on Nov. 30, 2021. That heartbreaking tragedy, however, does not define the community nor indicate its future. Its people, schools, businesses and institutions are charged with those responsibilities.

One remarkable youngster from Oxford shared what she discovered about awareness, kindness and active support with Spaulding for Children. Thank you, Taryn! You are making all the difference in world for us and to the future.
Back-to-School Give-Away
Spaulding is helping the families we serve as students get ready for school. We will be distributing backpacks and school supplies to the children and teens we serve.

The children should bring their school supply lists and "shop" on us, because everything is free.
We still need items so if you can make a donation, we would be appreciative.

While you are out and about filling your own kids' wish-lists, please consider picking up a few extra boxes of crayons or some extra notebooks. If you can, please drop them off at our office before Monday, Sept. 8.

Prepare for a Great School Year
Many students can use some tutoring to catch up- especially after the last few years online.
There are many resources among our community and partners. Please click on the organization's name to visit their home pages:
  • The Student Connection has tutoring in all subjects and test prep. Also, they can help adults who are looking to change careers and need to pass professional exams or testing to do so.
  • Augment your child’s school classes with exciting STEM programs at DAPCEP. Fall registration starts August 29 for all grades. You need not live in Detroit to attend.
  • More enrichment programs and sports programs are available through Detroit PAL -- our partner for the Resource Fair.
  • Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan offers a variety of programs.
Make It a Healthy Start
to the New School Year
Before your child starts school, they should be up to date on all heath visits. So, if you have not made those appointments yet, please do.

All vaccinations should be up to date. They should have an annual physical examination. Some schools and sports require athletes to undergo a sports physical and file a report from the doctor.

Vision checkups are recommended too. And remember to get new eyeglass prescriptions filled, if needed. Children’s’ eyes can change quickly and no one wants them struggling to see what teachers write on the chalk board.

Note: Judson Center will offer COVID-19 vaccinations at our Resource Fair, Saturday, Aug. 20, to eligible people through their mobile vaccination unit.

Get That Last Bit of Summer Fun In

Squeeze some family time into every minute before school starts. It doesn’t have to be a big get away.

Take some after dinner family walks. Schedule family bike rides or get the kids to decorate their bikes.

For some laughs, go back to the playground they enjoyed when they were little. Camp in your backyard. Toast s’mores over the fire.
Metro Detroit has a wealth of community parks, walking trails and pools to enjoy. Head to the Riverfront and count the freighters.

It’s the time together that counts. Just add smiles and laughs -- and you will have memories for a lifetime.

News from QIC/EY
The Quality Improvement Center on Engaging Youth in Finding Permanency (QIC-EY) is charged with advancing child welfare programs and practice to ensure that they are authentically engaging and empowering children and youth in child welfare throughout the U.S., especially in relation to permanency decisions.

Recognizing that many child welfare professionals often lack the time and resources to engage in regular evaluation of the work, the QIC-EY has taken the time to curate our findings to support professionals by providing the most up to date information about a core element to their work; authentically engaging with children and youth. In essence, we’ve done some of the hard work to organize the knowledge base surrounding child and youth engagement in child welfare so you don’t have to.
