March 2017

Together we can clothe every baby and ensure a safe pregnancy for every mother.
Operation Karibu is making a positive impact on childhood immunizations

One of the most obvious benefits of Operation Karibu is that program participants learn about the immunizations that protect their children from serious, and often life-threatening, illnesses. The relationships that Operation Karibu mothers form with health care providers in their neighborhood clinics make it much more likely that they get their children fully immunized. While we are still collecting data from our first year in Kakamega County, we are so encouraged to see that there were nearly 4,400 visits to the child welfare clinic in just one of our six Kakamega sites alone last year. This means that thousands of Operation Karibu children are getting those crucial immunizations. We look forward to reporting more developments about the impact of our program in the coming months.

International Women's Day

On March 8th we celebrated International Women's Day with people around the globe. We celebrated the human rights, diversity, unity, and collective power of women near and far. The day served as a moment to reflect on the value of women everywhere and a reminder to fight for their rights every day. At 2020 MicroClinic Initiative we believe maternal health is essential to human rights, and we will continue working to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all women.

“Even in distant, rural parts of the world, no [woman] should suffer the fatal risks of childbirth that were more widely seen a full century ago. Now, we know more, and can do more.”

Cultural exchange between West Hollywood Elementary and Pine Breeze Academy

After donating thousands of t-shirts and items of baby clothes to our program, the students of West Hollywood Elementary in Los Angeles are excited to engage in a cultural exchange with Pine Breeze Academy in Kakamega County, Kenya. They hope to share a bit about their life in California with the students of Pine Breeze and, in turn, learn about life in Kakamega County. The West Hollywood students wrote letters introducing themselves, made artwork, and even made a beautiful photo book to share with the Kenyan students. Our founder, Dr. Moka Lantum will hand deliver these items to Pine Breeze Academy in April. We look forward to updating you on this exchange as it unfolds!
