The MGIP Summer Meeting & the 40th Anniversary of the Group took place from the 15th until the 18th of June 2017 in Hotel Kempinski Palace, Portorož, as well as in Motovun. About 85 members and guests came to network at the conference, but also to celebrate! The weather was fantastic, the facilities spacy and the excursion to Motovun was full of memories.
The memorial plaque was presented at the garden wall of the former publishing house REVIJA and ‘birth place’ of MGIP

The MGIP summer meeting 2017: An excursion full of memories

The MGIP Summer Meeting & the 40th Anniversary of the group
started on Thursday evening with the traditional welcome dinner at the hotel – this year with a cocktail reception by invitation of the Slovene Book Agency and its director Aleš Novak, who was happy to meet MGIP members on the terrace of the hotel, before dinner was served in the Cristal Hall.
The second day started with the general assembly, some presentations and ‘business as usual’ in the conference hall. The afternoon lecture was given by Jörg Engelstädter from Canon (general sponsor of the Memory Book) about the topic of digital printing. In the evening the boat ‘Portorož‘ took us on a tour along the coast and to the Piran pier. From there we walked to the famous Tartini-Theatre where the mayor of Portorož, Mr. Peter Bossman, gave us a very special welcome. For those who didn’t attend, it should be mentioned that Mr. Bossman is originally from Ghana. He studied medicine in Ljubljana, where he met his wife and stayed in Slovenia. It is his 2nd term in office as mayor of Piran.
One of the highlights of this summer meeting was the presentation of our member Aleš Ŝteger. As he is not only a publisher, but also a poet and author, he took us on an acoustic trip. As Slovenia is located in the middle of Europe, it has borders with Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. Aleš once walked along these borders and wrote stories about what he saw, which he told us, accompanied by the well-known composer and musician Jure Tori, who played the accordion. The second day was rounded off with a lovely fish dinner and the boat trip back to Portorož.
The third day was dedicated to Motovun! Before that, there were two remarkable lectures. The first one was given by Holger Volland, Vice President of the Frankfurt Book Fair. He talked about the THE ARTS+: ‘The business of Creativity’. In the afternoon we heard from our keynote speaker Burhan Sömnez from Istanbul. He spoke about: 'Freedom of writing' and his daily life in Istanbul – words full of reflection!
Afterwards we set out for Motovun – an excursion full of memories! After having walked up the hill we started in ‘Kino Baur’ with a film, which Cristina Galimberti produced. It is a beautiful collection of pictures from old films, as well as of interviews that were taken at the last Frankfurt Book Fair. Very special and full of memories was the gathering in the garden of the former publishing house REVIJA, the ‘birth place’ of the Group.
In a moving ceremony Jan Martens and Ken Webb spoke about our founder Bato Tomasević - in presence of his wife Madge and his granddaughter Andreja. On this occasion a memorial plaque was presented at the garden wall.
With a dinner under the chestnut trees, the announcement of the winners of the MGIP Book Award and of next year’s summer meeting destination by Elisabeth Sandmann, the 40th summer meeting and anniversary found a very good end!
