Dear Neighbors:

Parking in Belmont Shore always has been a hot topic.  At our October 5 Meeting, Eric Lopez, project management officer in the Public Works Department at the City of Long Beach, will discuss the Belmont Shore Parking Study.  He will let us know which study recommendations the city already is implementing and ask members’ opinions on other study recommendations.  This is a good time for your voices to be heard.   We will also have the opportunity to meet the new LBPD East Division Commander Erik Herzog.

Please bring your ideas for future meeting topics and also concerns and issues you have about Belmont Shore and Belmont Park.

Our September 7 meeting was very informative.  Jake Heflin, firefighter/paramedic and Public Information Officer for the Long Beach Fire Department, did an outstanding job in giving us tips on preparing for an earthquake and other disasters.

It is time to renew your membership for 2017-2018.  You can go to and click on the JOIN icon.   The investment in our community is very reasonable at $15 per person per year, and will get you discounts at Belmont Shore businesses.  Our organization year begins every August 1.

We look forward to seeing you at 6 p.m., Thursday, October 5, at St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, 510 East Broadway at Granada Avenue.

Maintenance has Begun on
Pedestrian Beach Path

Public Works will be completing maintenance patching over the entire 3.1 mile Pedestrian Beach Path. As the work is being completed, maintenance personnel will be detouring pedestrians to the adjacent Beach Bike Path. Crews will be laying out cones and other visible indicators to direct pedestrians to the detour, protect pedestrians and maintenance crews, and separate the pedestrians from the bicycles.

All of the maintenance work will take place Monday through Friday. The project is expected to be completed by the end of October.

Murphy’s Pub at the Belmont

Jeff Cozart began working at the Belmont Athletic Club in 1985 as a racket stringer two days per week. He worked his way up to general manager of the facility, including Murphy’s Pub, which was opened on St. Patrick’s Day in 1983 by original owner John Doyle. “Health comes in many forms, and it’s not just physical but also mental and emotional health,” Cozart said. “He saw it as a place for people to congregate and relax and socialize, which is healthy. It just turned out to be a nice thing, not just for our members but also to open it to the public.” The pub is located above the fitness facility at 4918 E. 2nd St. and has seven employees. Cozart became the principal partner of the business in 2012 when Doyle retired, allowing an employee stock option program. The pub serves up more than 70 different beers from around the world, most of which are included in the world beer punch card tour – a challenge to drink 70 beers (not all at once – come on, people) to earn a bronze plaque on the Hall of Hops wall and a T-shirt. “[The pub] just feels comfortable and welcoming to everybody. I see that, whether it’s someone who comes in for the first time or the vast number of regulars that we have that come in.” For more information, visit
