Making the most of your day in Cardiff

The Nystagmus Network Open Day 2019 will be Europe's biggest nystagmus get together and our biggest and best event yet! With such a packed schedule we want to make sure that you have every opportunity to make the very most of your day. Here are just some of the highlights.

Dan Williams, our keynote speaker

Daniel Williams is an entrepreneur, living with sight loss. He is the founder of Visualise Training and Consultancy. He is passionate about equality at work for vision impaired people and raising awareness of the needs of blind and partially sighted employees. Hear him talk about his business career and his personal experience of living with deteriorating sight.

Only Ben can make this world right

Vision impaired singer songwriter, Ben Haynes, will be headlining at Open Day.

Meet Ben. Hear him talk about his early days as a young person with nystagmus, playing drums in the garage until his big break into music.

Ben will also play a live acoustic set for us.

Research HUB is back!

Not only will you be able to hear firsthand from the top nystagmus researchers and clinicians in the UK about their latest findings, you can chat with them one to one all day in our research HUB.

Meet Nadine at Open Day

Author of the 2019 book ‘Can I tell you about Nystagmus?’ will be at Open Day.

Amber, the leading character in Nadine’s book, was inspired by her daughter, who has nystagmus.

At Open Day Nadine will be happy to chat with parents and share experiences of parenting a child with impaired vision.

She will also be signing copies of her book. If you’ve already purchased a copy, bring it along. Or you can buy a copy on the day.

Make and take with Gwyn

Gwyn is an enthusiastic individual with a wealth of experience and knowledge in the field of education and vision impairment. She set up her company, Positive Eye to improve outcomes for children with vision impairments.

At Open Day 2019 Gwyn will show you how to make the most of all the senses to develop vision and the enjoyment of learning. Be prepared to have a go, making simple toys and props from everyday household items to make learning fun at home.

Join Frances and Claire for SEND workshops

Frances will be presenting on SEND and the rights in law of the vision impaired child to support in the early years and at school. Alongside our second IPSEA trained education advocate, Claire Brinn, Frances will also be running workshops for parents and carers, answering your individual questions and taking referrals.

For those with children in school in Wales we will have education law experts with us from Sinclairslaw, Cardiff.

Our education advocacy service is available free of charge to members of the Nystagmus Network.

The DVLA answers your questions

Following changes, earlier this year, to requirements around nystagmus and driving in the UK, we've asked a medical expert from the DVLA to come along to Open Day to answer all your questions.

Dr Gareth Rees will join us in Cardiff for an informal question and answer session, so whether you’re a new driver or have been driving for years, or you know a young person about to begin lessons, hear firsthand about the DVLA sight test and when it's legal and safe to drive with nystagmus.

And there's more ...

If that isn't enough to help you plan your day, we also have presentations and workshops with Mike Hughes, our benefits adviser, Russell Ham from Specsavers Low Vision Services, Owen Williams from Welsh Council for the Blind, a whole team of ECLOs (Eye Clinic Liaison Officers) and QTVIs (Qualified Teachers of Vision Impaired children and young people), Jules and Hannah running a parents' forum, the fabulous Wil Maudsley, our exhibition of assistive technologies and support services and lots, lots more!
