👋Hi again,

Welcome to a new edition of the State of Charge Newsletter. A concise monthly overview of the renewable energy transition and the advent of electric mobility.

This month we dream of a car-free Manhattan, we get recommendations on how to accelerate the used-EV market, and we listen to a podcast about Egypt and Costa Rica pushing electric mobility.
SoC Big Story

In the last edition of the State of Charge, we shared a report by T&E that analyzed the Total Costs of Ownership of ride-hailing electric fleets in Europe. This month, a new study by the University of California found that electrifying ride-hailing vehicles' emission reduction benefits are approximately three times higher than the ones we can get from regular vehicle usage.

Over the last decade, European governments have favored biodiesel as an alternative to diesel and gasoline, but the production of biodiesel also has a significant impact on the worlds' ecosystems. The good news is that in 2019 EU directives changed, and we are slowly moving away from supporting biodiesel. The bad news? The amount of forest-ravaging palm oil used to make EU 'bio'-diesel increased with 7% last year.

Want to know more about EVs and autonomous driving? You're in luck! Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have just released a study on the effects of automated driving on EV range and battery longevity.

McKinsey has analyzed ten popular electric cars from Chinese manufacturers and has concluded that Chinese electric cars are currently offering the best quality/price ratio.
SoC Deep Dive

The number of newly sold EVs is a great indicator of market growth and every month we report global sales statistics. However, the second-hand EV market hasn't really picked up yet, and so far we haven't been able to share much with you on the subject. Research done by Autovista Group, TWAICE and TÜV Rheinland, changes that. This paper looks at uncertainties used-car buyers face and how to potentially end information asymmetry between the used vehicle buyer and seller.

One of the key takeaways from this paper is the need for OEMs need to be more transparent about the quality of the battery and potential degradation.
