Sustainability Awards 2016

We are all looking forward to our annual awards ceremony which takes place on the 9th June. The event gives the Sustainability Service an opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved with sustainability initiatives and the Green Impact scheme, give the teams their much-deserved awards and celebrate people’s contribution to sustainability throughout the year. The past academic year saw new sustainability-related initiatives on- and off-campus as well as the continuing success of projects that have been set up long ago.   We will be live-tweeting on the evening and posting information in the run-up to the event so make sure you follow us on Twitter to see the nominations.
Sustainability Exhibition

Leading up to the Sustainability Awards and aligning with its theme ‘past and present’, we are showcasing an exhibition in the Refectory in the week commencing 6th June. The exhibition focuses on how far the University has come from a team of one with a single policy, to a network of people of hundreds of staff and students across campus and beyond all working towards an integrated Sustainability Strategy.

Green Impact submissions

This year’s Green Impact teams have worked on some outstanding sustainability initiatives. Have a read through the articles they have written to find out more about the projects they have worked on and their experience with Green Impact: http://sustainability.leeds.ac.uk/green-impact-submissions/

EAUC Conference

Amanda Jackson, Sustainability Officer, presented at the 20th annual The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) Conference in Bristol this week.  Her presentation on how the University of Leeds is building community capacity through its Community Mentoring Scheme was well received.
Leave Leeds Tidy

If you are a student moving out of your house, there are lots of ways for you to make sure you and your house mates leave Leeds tidy. I f you have any unwanted items, you can donate them to the Student Union’s Charity Shop or take them to any of your local charity shops. You can leave your clothes, kitchen good and banks at Leave Leeds Tidy’s donation banks in the LUU Foyer. Keep an eye out for the additional textile donation banks around the Hyde Park and Headingley area. Also, follow our social media for tips on how to reduce waste and what to do with left-over food.

You could also sell your reusable unwanted items at the Leave Leeds Tidy Jumble Sale! All members of the community are welcome to join at Leeds University Union for a spot of bargain hunting.

Noise

Noise from house parties is a particular issue in local communities at this time of year. Whilst students will want to enjoy and celebrate the end of their exams, this should be done in a responsible manner which does not cause distress or disturbance to nearby residents including students revising for exams, A-levels and GCSEs.

For more information about noise and who to contact if your neighbours are being too noisy, please see our Blog for regular updates.
Living in Leeds guide review

University life for many students involves making a move out into the communities of Leeds with friends and running a household for the first time. The Living in Leeds guide has been produced to help students make the most of their time whilst living in Leeds as well as providing information on the essentials of being a Leeds resident.

We are currently in the process of reviewing the guide and we would be very grateful if you could fill out this short survey to help: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Y3Y9G8Y
