Recently Simmental Australia conducted a Trade Mission to China led by Mr Garry Gillett, Vic, Simmental Australia, Vice President. Mrs Audrey Weightman; WA, Simmental Australia Director and delegates Mr David Weightman, WA, Mr Brad Patterson, WA and Mrs Sylvia Patterson, WA.
Some of the places visited were The Institute of Animal Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences where Professor Junya Li,  Leader of Chinese beef cattle breeding and Chairman of the Chinese Simmental Association gave an informative history of the Chinese breeding programs and Simmental herd makeup in China.

In 2015 the Chinese cattle herd was 42.846 million head (MH) of cattle, 7.5 Million local (Yack, etc.), 35.3 Million Yellow crossbreed of which 28 Million are Simmental/Simmental cross.  70% of the beef herd is crossbred and 30% purebred. Simmental is now the biggest herd for beef production with genetics imported from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Argentina, Uruguay and Costa Rica. In 2003 Simmental was officially established as a new breed.

The Delegation also visited the Fu Hua Feedlot and processing plant that also owns a chain of 150 Hot Pot restaurants throughout China. Also enterprises and business people looking to import, sale venues and farmers in Inner Mongolia, Lily and Dong's enterprise and the newly completed Mongolian Kerchin Seed stock park. This is where some Australian bulls and their progeny are stationed along with some heifers from Australia being evaluated for embryo production. This centre is only 1 of 42 in Inner Mongolia and will have around 100 bulls producing 2,000,000 straws of semen annually.

Federal Council

The ASBA directors had a teleconference in August where the  decision was made to simplify the SimAngus register to no longer having dual registration and will now only be noted with the D in their ident. Simbrahs are still being reviewed.

The next meeting of directors will be in Armidale in November.

Around the ASBA Office

The Summer Annual Magazine is in the works at the moment. Felicity is after your paddock photos to use throughout the magazine. Any story leads you'd like us to chase up would be appreciated.

Spreadsheets: We've put some work into the spreadsheets listed below to make it easier for those who don't have great internet service but can download to work on then email back to us.
They are:
Sale Lots details - for your catalogue
Sale Results
Sale Transfers
Dam Disposal Form
Save them as an excel or .csv file, and send them into the office. Please read the information tab and don't change any of the columns around. Call if you have any questions.

Male inventory: Please consider using the Dam Disposal Form above and the online version, to clean up the males on the system. I doubt you have 20 year old bulls sitting in the paddock. This would also be a great way for us to check the forms are loading correctly before the next dam disposal forms are needed!!!
Simmental Youth

If you're in the Kenilworth QLD, area this weekend, drop in and see Audrey Rose Torrielli's, Trinity Vale Kruze giving a lift to the local Police. Audrey does a lot of promotional work with Kruze introducing him to people who've never been up close and personal to a bull before. Click here for the video.

Adelaide Show came up trumps for some young handlers with Jacob Canning winning the 8 and under 12 years age group and Olivia Baker placing 3rd. A great achievement by these young Simmental members, both leading their own cattle. Photo by Ruby Canning

Each week on the website we post the agent's quotes for that week that we can find. I find plenty of market reports that don't name the breed. Have a word to your agent to send their reports to us or for them to post on social media, tagging Simmental Australia in their posts.
