Creating transformational opportunities for at-risk youth through boat building and positive mentorship.

Together We Rise!

We are super excited about the Together We Rise! Fundraiser. It was a smashing success, and thanks to the many supporters of TCBB we surpassed our goals! There were more than 250 people at the event. All our auction items were either made in house or donated by our great community of friends. Thanks to all of you!  With this infusion of resources we are ready to do even more than ever.

Founder Paul Birkey Honored

As everyone knows, growth equals change, and TCBB is growing. We are moving forward fast, but we don’t want to forget our roots! TCBB was formed by a band of really hardworking visionaries led by Paul Birkey, our founder. At the close of the event, the first ever Lifesaver Award was given to Paul as a way to honor his dedication and hard work. Thanks Paul! We wouldn’t be here without you! And we look forward to the future as we rise together to support Tacoma’s youth through mentorship and hands-on learning.

New Board Members

Over the last year much energy has been dedicated to thinking about what comes next for TCBB. We’ve worked hard to strengthen our Board of Directors, bringing in new folks to expand our strengths. In October we voted in two new Board officers. We welcome Kurt Miller as our new Board Chair and Clifford Armstrong III as Secretary.

Board Secretary Clifford Armstrong III.

When asked about his decision to accept the position, here is what Kurt had to say:

"I look forward to working with the TCBB Board, staff, volunteers, and community to continue to bring much-needed programming to the young people. I hope to build upon what Paul and his fellow visionaries have created over the years.

"TCBB brings incredible resources that enable young people to develop new skills and learn that they are able to do things that they never knew were possible. At TCBB there are people that care about them and will listen when they want to share their story."

And that’s exactly it! TCBB is a space full of possibilities and caring people dedicated to welcoming the youth who need what we have to offer. The mentors and staff, volunteers and all of you have made it happen. We are continually amazed by the generosity and commitment this community has for the young people we serve.

Our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner

TCBB started as a boat shop. It has grown to be a family, a space with traditions and hopes for the future. One of our favorites is the Thanksgiving meal created by a group of friends very near and dear to us. This week we celebrated our second annual feast thanks to the turkey dinner brigade: Debbie and Paul Birkey, Ken and Teresa Slattery, Cindy and Jerry Anderson, Ron and Lois Trapp, and Diane LaFanier. Thanks to them the youth and mentors had happy full bellies. What a wonderful way to wind down our Fall boat builder session. Thank you!
