It has been a busy spring for GCAA! The aggregate industry in Georgia is thriving and GCAA has been busy with our legislative delegation in Georgia and in Washington DC, the GDOT, Ga EPD and with several programs for our industry.

Quarry Tour and Roundtable with Congressman Drew Ferguson April 19, 2017
Vulcan Materials - Barin Quarry
On April 19th, GCAA sponsored a quarry tour and roundtable discussion with Congressman Drew Ferguson (Ga 3rd District)- https://ferguson.house.gov/. Congressman Ferguson is a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Vulcan hosted this event at the Barin Quarry in Columbus, Georgia. Vulcan representatives – Roger Hendrix, Kenny Knowles and Jimmy Fleming gave an overview of the industry and the Barin Quarry. Congressman Ferguson, members of his staff, The Georgia Transportation Alliance, Columbus Quarry and Caterpillar also participated in the roundtable and tour.
Washington Legislative Fly In
May 15 - 17, 2017
GCAA participated in a transportation fly-in in Washington, DC, May 15-17. The purpose of the fly-in was to begin a dialogue regarding continued transportation and infrastructure funding. GCAA participated in meetings with members of the Georgia federal legislative delegation along with GDOT Commissioner Russell McMurry, Robert Brown, GDOT Board chairman, the Georgia Transportation Alliance, the Georgia Highway Contractors Association, Oldcastle and Vulcan. The meetings were productive and gave good insight to the delegation regarding our industry. Photos –

On May 16th, GCAA held the first of (3) three Stormwater Compliance Workshops for our members. These workshops are being held to update and educate our membership on recent changes in Georgia Stormwater Compliance regulations. Vulcan hosted the meeting at its Kennesaw Quarry. Additional workshops will be held on June 13 at Bluegrass Materials - Cumming Quarry and July 18 at Brickyard @ Riverside – Macon, GA.

GCAA cohosted the Annual Safety Alliance Workshop with the Georgia Mining Association on May 3-4 in Macon, Ga. This annual conference is a way to educate our industry on safety practices and show our strong commitment to the importance of health and safety in our industry. Brian McNamara, Safety and Health, Bluegrass Materials, serves as the GCAA Safety Committee Chairman and he served on the planning committee for GCAA.

Management Development Course Safety Programs Class Yancey Bros. Co. Training Facility

Each year GCAA offers a Management Development course for our membership. These classes are held each month at Yancey Headquarters in Austell, GA. In May, Brian McNamara, Bluegrass Materials, gave an overview of MSHA and safety issues in our industry. The class begins in January of each year and concludes in December. On April 24th, GCAA participated in the CEFGA annual Appreciation Luncheon and recap. This was a great opportunity to recap the event and work on strategies for improvement for next year’s event. Sandra Mathis, Hanson Aggregates and Jeff Wansley represented GCAA at the luncheon.

GCAA, along with many of our members, participated in the annual Georgia Highway Contractors Association annual meeting. This is a great way to connect with other members of the transportation and infrastructure industry and discuss issues of importance in Georgia.
