Welcome! I’m excited to be able to share, through this newsletter, some of the many important innovations the National Science Foundation (NSF) supports that are making an impact on U.S. industry, education, health care, national security and global competitiveness. NSF-supported research not only enhances these areas, but also improves the quality of life for each of us.
NSF funding is crucial to the basic research and development of technologies that underpin the fabric of our everyday lives. Consider, for instance, what life would be like without the Internet, barcodes, Google or the laser. We couldn’t keep in touch on Facebook, check out of the grocery store on our own, search for the nearest restaurant in a new city or see clearly without glasses. At some point in the development of each of these technologies, NSF funding of basic research has played a role.
Ensuring the U.S. remains competitive globally requires that the nation continue to innovate. NSF’s mission, “to promote the progress of science,” is crucial to fulfilling this need. Through innovation, NSF creates the means to increase America’s economic strength and secure our place as a global leader.
