Dear Friends!

I’m just back from Beijing and São Paulo, two poster children for the urgently needed urban strategies that Terreform is dedicated to! Since our inception we’ve been pressing the envelope in conceiving new forms and strategies for creating just, sustainable, and beautiful cities through research, strategic design interventions, and now books by way of our publishing imprint, UR. We hope you’ll include us among the progressive organizations you support. Every little bit helps and all donations are fully tax-deductible.

Our website and newsletters should have you up to date on what we’ve done in 2018 but I want to preview some of what we’ll accomplish, with your help, in 2019.
  • Collaborative study of the impending transformation of the South Side of Chicago in light of the arrival of the Obama Presidential Center.
  • Home Grown (at last!)–the first volume of our long-running project, New York City [Steady] State, an investigation of the prospects, practices, and logics of urban metabolic self-sufficiency.
  • Continuing studies on waste, energy, and mobility.
  • A volume saluting the essential contributions of Mike Davis.
  • Open Gaza–a compendium of supportive ideas for that devastated place.
  • A volume on the social housing of Gregory Ain.
  • A critical look at the trouble with “smart cities” and the take-over of planning by the likes of Google and Amazon.
  • Collaborative study on the global spatial dispersal and living circumstances of Syrian refugees.
  • A study on the possibilities of a “second growth” of the thousands of modernist, single-use, car-dependent, and architecturally alienating housing projects that remain the planning default.
And much more! Our flying squad – and propaganda arm – are ready to jump in to situations where our expertise, enthusiasm, and progressive politics can offer alternative solutions and foment invigorated discussion, support, and push-back.
Won’t you help us?  We invite not simply your checks but your collaboration and suggestions for projects, research, books, and advocacy.  And, if you’re in the neighborhood, drop by to chew the rag with us!
With Solidarity and Gratitude,
Michael Sorkin
