What's New at
Orchard House?

As we speed through March and we start to feel the optimism of Spring, we want to talk to you about the exciting times and changes at Orchard House Veterinary Centres.

The Orchard House Family
Practice Manager Claire is now back to work having welcomed her first baby Archie into the world. Archie, now 8 months old, is thriving. He enjoys going swimming, seeing his friends at baby group and loves spending time with his grandparents while his mummy is at work!
Ellie White from our mobile clinic and Stocksfield is currently on maternity leave having had her daughter Lucy in December. Ellie is loving being a mum, she can often be found on a country walk with Lucy and with Islay, her black Labrador, in tow!
We are very sorry to say that vet Susie Bruce will be leaving the practice at the end of this month to spend a year travelling with her boyfriend Doug. Susie will be a big miss but we are sure you will join us in wishing her all the best for her trip of a lifetime. We hope to welcome her back to the practice in a year’s time.
Our 'dog family' has also recently expanded! Penny has just welcomed “Woody”, her 8 week old Cocker Spaniel into her life. Penny says "he is a lovely puppy, but mad as a box of frogs, with sharp teeth that hurt, a lot!" Everyone is looking forward to meeting him and having puppy cuddles!

Hannah has taken on the challenge of the 5K Swimathon  on Saturday 8th April. A self-confessed ‘hopeless runner’ she leaving her trainers and home and instead gathering her cossy and goggles in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society , a charity close to her heart. Training has been intense and with only a few weeks to go she is making great progress and is close to her fundraising target of £1000!
If you would like to help Hannah reach her target you can do so by visiting her Just Giving page . Thank you very much.

We wish Hannah the best wishes for her swim.
Making progress at Bellingham!

Following a small delay after the Christmas break, the building work has restarted at The Old Police Station in Bellingham. We are coming across many original features and ‘stories’ from its former life, we hope to incorporate as many as we can in our brand new surgery. We want to keep some of the building’s Police Station history in the fabric and style of the new surgery.

Demolition works are complete. The foundations are laid for the new extension which will house the operating theatre, preparation room and kennels.

We now have a dedicated email address and telephone number for Bellingham: bellingham@orchardhousevets.com and 01434 220330. Both currently divert to Hexham, so if Bellingham will be your local surgery, feel free to use these in preparation for the opening!

We hope that we will open the doors to you in July. Visit our website www.orchardhousevets.com/bellingham to keep up to date with the progress.
Prevention is better than cure!..

At Orchard House, we aim to keep your pets in good health, not just waiting for illness to develop. We recommend treating your pet all year around to prevent flea, tick and worm infestations, especially as some can impact human health. During the warmer months, it becomes even more important to ensure you are in a regular routine. Central heating and climate change are conditions in which parasites thrive without treatment. We can recommend the best product for you and your pet and help or guide you to administer the treatment.

Thankfully most of the common parasites that affect pets can be treated, but we feel prevention is better than cure. Their ability to hide, survive and multiply can mean that treatment of infestations is both time consuming and expensive.

Want to know how you can provide your pet with the best preventative healthcare and spread the cost over 12 months? Ask us today about our exclusive Well Pet Club.
Improved reminder service

We now send complimentary SMS and/or e-mail reminders to remind you to apply or give your pet's parasite prevention treatment. The reminder will start assuming you give the first dose when you buy a treatment. Most treatments are three monthly, so you will get a reminder to treat every three months.

We will also contact you to remind you the day before an appointment, when your pet's next vaccination is due and other treatment reminders.

Online booking service

Many of you will know that it is now possible to book vet and nurse appointments online via our website. Why not book your next appointment online, to sign up, you will need to register using details we hold for you on our database.

Once signed up, you will have access to your very own Pet Portal where you can keep track of your pet’s appointments and even upload images of them!

Slug pellet update

We thought we had seen the end of the worrying recent episodes of poisoning in popular dog walking areas in Hexham. We hope that it was helpful for us to keep you informed on Facebook, and that Jill and Tim’s BBC Radio and Susie’s ITV Tyne-Tees News items informed rather than alarming dog owners. Unfortunately there were further reports on last week of another suspect substance at Tyne Green.

Investigating the suspected poisoning is the in the hands of the Police and Northumberland County Council.

We would like to remind you of the symptoms to look out for:
  • Drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Wobbliness
  • Tremors and or Convulsions
  • Panting
  • High body temperature
Products containing “metaldehyde”, symptoms will occur quickly after ingestion. If you suspect your dog may have eaten pelleted material, or if your dog has suspicious clinical signs then please call us immediately.

Dogs can die from metaldehyde poisoning, but the prognosis is good if treatment is started promptly.

Please remain vigilant when walking your dogs in public areas.

That’s all for now, we hope you are able to enjoy the improving weather, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Best wishes from all the team at Orchard House Vets
