Since the last issue, at YU we have:
Established the Industrial Strategy Group
YU established a new advisory group, with a specific focus on place-based development, in the context of the Industrial Strategy and the role of HEIs in its delivery.

Responded to the Science and Technology Committee inquiry on the 'Balance and effectiveness of the research and innovation spending'
We submitted evidence to this Select Committee inquiry and Peter O'Brien will give oral evidence to the Committee at a session to be held on 28 February. This takes place in advance of a YU workshop on 4 March that will examine R&D and innovation investment and activity in Yorkshire. See more in the 'things to look forward to' section below.
We also posed the question of what challenges and opportunities the government’s ‘2.4% R&D target’ would present to Yorkshire at the White Rose residential of PhD students in January.

Responded to the HE Commission's enquiry into Degree Apprenticeships
The final report of the HE Commission included contributions from a number of YU members, of which Leeds Trinity University, the University of Hull and Sheffield Hallam University were quoted in the report directly.
We will continue to work closely with Universities UK on their skills policy activity and their future for degree apprenticeships project

Peter O’Brien gave the keynote speech at the Australian Regional Universities Network Conference on 'Anchor Institutions Transforming their Regions'
As a follow-up, our anchor institution work was expanded, and in December YU held a roundtable discussion on the role of universities as anchor institutions in Yorkshire.
In January, Peter was invited to speak at the Equality and Democracy in Local & City Government Conference at the University of York.,you can watch the speech here (starting at 18:45 mins).
We look forward to expanding our work in this field and collaborating with the Centre for Local Economic Strategies on their national Centre of Excellence programme for anchor institutions in the near future.

Responded to the Civic University Commission and the UK2070 Commission into regional inequalities
We look forward to the publication of the interim and final reports from both commissions and to continue to engage with the work streams being delivered as part of the two inquiries.

Held a facilitated development session on how universities and partners in Yorkshire might influence and shape the nature of the proposed UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
You can read the excellent overview from Kevin Richardson, Local Academy, titled: YU on the front foot in thinking about future ‘growth’ funding

Supported the Industrial Strategy and Civic Need conference with the Leeds Social Sciences Institute, where Peter chaired a panel on understanding and developing regional innovation and civic priorities.

Held our 2018 Annual General Meeting and Board of Directors meeting where Sarah Longlands, Director, IPPR North, was the guest speaker.

Completed and published YU’s 2017-18 Annual Report and Accounts for 2017-18.
