Indian Swimmers in Cape waters
I met Raju and 16 year old Prabhat Koli in September 2015 in Dover UK at Varne Ridge, a base for many English Channel hopefuls. Prabhat had just completed an impressive swim of 64km around Jersey Island in 10 hours and 11 minutes. He went on to swim the English Channel in a time of 13 hours and 14 minutes and immediately set his sights on some cold water swims in Cape Town.
Prabhat’s planned swims in Cape Town attracted the attention of 13 year old Saee Sukale and we started planning their visit to Cape Town.
Saee and Prabhat became regular features at our morning swims in Big Bay and as they overcame their initial shock at our water temperatures we decided that an introductory 8km swim in Langebaan would assist with acclimatizing from their usual training temperatures in the upper 20s.
Both Saee and Prabhat went on to achieve 6 significant swims in around 3 weeks including Freedom Swim, Cape Point and the 18km West Coast Angle. It was a pleasure for us to host two super respectful and appreciative youngsters and their families during their SA visit and we look forward to following their swimming careers with many big achievements to come.
Prabhat has since successfully swam Catalina Channel and Saee is booked for an English Channel as soon as she turns 16.
