“Everything old is new again!”

That’s how the saying goes. And, nothing could be truer when it comes to this holiday season.Taking a page from the 20th century retail behemoth Sears & Roebuck Company, Amazon is printing its first toy catalogue, A Holiday of Play, this year.

Nostalgically I remember the Christmas Wish Book that arrived in our mailbox each fall. I clearly recall lying on the floor in front of the fireplace and dreamily turning the pages filled with dolls and action figures, board games, books and bikes. Growing up in rural eastern North Carolina far from any glitzy toy stores, the arrival of the Sears Christmas catalogue was anxiously anticipated every fall.

The 21st century marketplace has seen huge advertising changes. I would have thought that electronic advertising would be the tool of choice for today’s young shoppers “when vision of sugarplums dance in their heads.” Reading about Amazon’s foray into the world of print advertising, I couldn’t help but wonder if Jeff Bezos also remembered the Sears Christmas Wish Book!

As we near the close of another year, it’s fun to recall our authentic, all-inclusive travel experiences exploring, learning and having fun with others along the scenic highways and byways of the Tarheel state in 2018.
