ASIPI - WIPO Workshop on PCT in Montevideo 
 
On November 9, 2016 ASIPI and WIPO held a Seminar on PCT at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel of Montevideo.
 
The workshop was attended by Ms. Marianela Delor, Director General of the National Directorate of Industrial Property (DNPI), Mr. Rolando M. Hernández Vigaud, Chief, Office Services Section, Division of International Cooperation, Patent Sector and Technology, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Mr. Peter Waring, Chief, Technical Cooperation Section, Division of International Cooperation, Patent and Technology Sector, WIPO, and Mr. Christof Mathoi, Attorney , PCT Affairs, European Patent Office.
 
With a total of 30 participants, the event began with a presentation of the activities of the Inter American Association of Industrial Property (ASIPI) conducted by Juan Vanrell, Past President of the Association, followed by a brief reference on the latest developments in the area of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) in Uruguay.
 
The event was of great interest and usefulness to participants as well as to the DNPI authorities who honored us with their presence.

Seminar in Lima: "Decision 486 - Proposals for Modification" 


On November 3, 2016, the Seminar “Decision 486 – Proposals for Modification” organized by the Inter-American Intellectual Property Association (ASIPI) was held in Lima, under the auspices of the firm Barreda Moller. Ray Meloni, Director of the Division of Distinctive Signs and President of the Distinctive Signs Commission of the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Intellectual Property – INDECOPI, participated as speaker and Carlos Auza, Principal Delegate of ASIPI, was the moderator.

 ASIPI-WIPO Workshop on PCT in Asunción

The ASIPI-WIPO Workshop on PCT in Asuncion was held on Friday, November 11, 2016 at the Gran Hotel of Paraguay, with the participation of approximately 30 attendees.
 
The foreign speakers were Mr. Rolando M. Hernández Vigaud, Chief, Office Services Section, Division of International Cooperation, Patent and Technology Sector, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Mr. Peter Waring, Chief, Technical Cooperation Section, Division of International Cooperation, Patent and Technology Sector, WIPO, and Mr. Christof Mathoi, Attorney, PCT Affairs, European Patent Office.  Ms. Raquel Tóñanez and Mr. Fabrizio Modica participated in their capacity of Delegate and Alternate Delegate of ASIPI, respectively.
 
The characteristics of the PCT were discussed, as well as the electronic mechanisms for requesting the ePCT and the experience of the European Patent Office. Finally, it was agreed the importance and benefits that would bring to Paraguay the adhesion to that international treaty.
 
 ASIPI/WIPO Workshop on PCT in Panama City

The ASIPI-WIPO Workshop on PCTs took place on Monday, November 14, 2016, in the Bahía Salon of the Union Club in Panama City.
 
The first panelist was Mr. Rolando Hernández Vigaud, Head of the Office Services Section, Division of International Cooperation, Patent and Technology Sector, of the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva, who presented the latest developments of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).
 
The second panelist of the seminar was Mr. Peter Waring, Chief of the Technical Cooperation Section, PCT International Cooperation Division, of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), who spoke about the ePCT Portal.
 
The last panelist was Mr. Christof Mathoi, Advocate for PCT Affairs Directorate 5.2.2.1, of the European Patent Office. Mr Mathoi addressed the main aspects of the European Patent System and the PCT.
 
 
 
ASIPI participates in the V International Congress of the
OTT - México Network

Enrique Díaz, Treasurer of ASIPI, participated in the V International Congress of the OTT Mexico Network, which took place from November 2 to 4 in Tijuana, Baja California. ASIPI’s participation was in support of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
 
The event had the participation of approximately 420 attendees, who enjoyed five workshops imparted simultaneously. Within the academic program, Mr. Enrique Díaz was in charge of imparting a Workshop on Licensing and Negotiation of Technological Developments.
 
This congress served to strengthen the ties of collaboration with WIPO, and to evaluate other joint activities in the future.
 Executive Committee of ASIPI met in Buenos Aires


The members of the Executive Committee of ASIPI met on December 1 and 2 in Buenos Aires to report on the activities carried out since their last face-to-face meeting in August in Sao Paulo, as well as to coordinate projects and future events of the Association. It was two days of intense work in which also the last details of the next Work Sessions to be started in this city were revised.
 
ASIPI’s Officers met with the President of INPI in Buenos Aires
 
On December 2, ASIPI´s Officers met with Mr. Dámaso Pardo, President of the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and his team. This meeting allowed to strengthen ties and identify projects of mutual interest for the protection and defense of Industrial Property.

 
 
ASIPI/INTA Study on the Impact of Trademarks in Latin America in Santiago de Chile

On December 13, 2016, was launched the ASIPI/INTA study on “The Trademarks in Latin America, economic impact in five countries of the region” at the headquarters of the National Chamber of Commerce of Chile.
 
The event began with a press conference in which the President of the National Chamber of Commerce of Chile Ricardo Mewes, the National Director of INAPI Maximiliano Santa Cruz, the Director of INTA Etienne Sanz de Acedo and the Vice President 2 of ASIPI Rafael Covarrubias, served as speakers.
 
Following the press conference, a closed Round Table was held, attended by high officials from INAPI, Customs, officials and members of the Chamber of Commerce, ASIPI Delegate of Chile Noelle Jeanneret, Etienne Sanz de Acedo for INTA, Francisco Silva member of Project Team and Rafael Covarrubias for ASIPI.

 
Press Conference and a Roundtable were held at Panama City for the launch of the ASIPI-INTA impact study entitled “Trademarks in Latin America”

On December 14, a press conference and a roundtable were held for the launch of the ASIPI-INTA impact study entitled “Trademarks in Latin America”. This event was held at the Chamber of Commerce of Panama and attended by important members of the press.
 
During the press conference, the Director of the General Directorate of Industrial Property of Panama gave the local press a brief introduction to the history of the trademarks followed by a series of general data related to Panama’s trademark statistics. The representatives of ASIPI and INTA then spoke about the work done jointly by the Associations in relation to the impact of the intensive trademarks sectors. The representatives of ASIPI and INTA also explained to the press about the final objective of the study with a special emphasis on the methodology and conclusions.


 
The "Trademark Impact Study" is officially introduced in Bogota, Colombia

ASIPI and INTA held a roundtable discussion followed by a press conference on 14 December 2016 in Bogota, Colombia, to officially introduce the results of the “Trademark Impact Study"
 
The meeting was attended by Mr. José Luis Londoño, Delegate Superintendent for Intellectual Property of the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce of Colombia, Jorge Chávarro, Member 1 of ASIPI and Etienne Sanz de Acedo, CEO of INTA.
 
At both the round table and the press conference, the participants presented interesting questions in relation to the study, which showed the great interest of the attendees in the results of this study.

 

Trademark Impact Study launched in Peru

 
On December 15 took place the Press Conference and Round Table in Peru regarding the Trademark Impact Study. Both activities went very well and were attended by three of the most relevant Peruvian communication media.
 In the Press Conference there were speeches from the Director of the Peruvian Trademark Office, from INTA (Etienne Sanz de Acedo) and a last speech from ASIPI (Jaime Durand). There were some questions from the audience and reporters regarding the wage premium in trademark intensive industries.
 The round table was a discussion about the report itself and the uses it might have.  All agreed in the importance of spreading the Study.
ASIPI / INTA officially launches the "Trademark Impact Study" in Mexico
 
On December 15, 2016 in Mexico City, ASIPI and INTA officially presented the “Trademark Impact Study”. The event had two stages, first a press conference held at the Secretariat of Economy, which was attended by Miguel Ángel Margain, General Director of the Mexican Institute of Intellectual Property (IMPI), who gave the opening remarks and presented the study. The same conference, was also attended by Enrique Diaz, Treasurer of ASIPI and Gerardo Muñoz de Cote of INTA.

 
 
 
ASIPI signs collaboration agreements with Conciliation and Arbitration Centers

 

During the XIX Work Sessions and Administrative Council held in Buenos Aires, Maria del Pilar Troncoso, President of ASIPI, signed on behalf of the Association, three Collaboration Agreements with the National Chamber of Commerce of Mexico City, the Arbitration Center of Mexico and the International Chamber of Commerce of Mexico.
 On the other hand, an Interinstitutional Cooperation Agreement with the Arbitration and Mediation Center of Santiago, Chile, and with the Arbitration and Mediation Center of the Cámaras de la Producción del Azuay were also signed.
 These collaboration agreements were signed as part of an initiative of the Mediation, Conciliation and Arbitration Working Committee, seeking to expand academic and technical activities in this area in relation to Intellectual Property.

ASIPI and the Supreme Court of Justice of Paraguay sign Collaboration Agreement

 

In the framework of the XIX Work Sessions and Administrative Council, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, ASIPI and the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) of Paraguay signed a Collaboration Agreement. 

Maria del Pilar Troncoso, President of ASIPI, and Maria Gabriela Talavera, Director of Intellectual Property Rights who attended on behalf of Dr. Gladys Bareiro de Modica, Judge of the CSJ, met to carry out the formal signing ceremony. 

This agreement assumes that both entities are committed to mutual cooperation in the field of Intellectual Property for the exchange of academic, technical and scientific information, to implement training courses, to hold seminars, workshops and round tables, participation in events, among other initiatives in favor of the IP community.

Currently, these parties are in talks for the first work to be done together in 2017.

Passing of Mr. Allan Pilson, Member of Honor of ASIPI
With deep sadness we inform you that on December 16 Mr. Allan Pilson, Member of Honor, Treasurer and part of the Executive Committee of our Association from 1989 to 2003, passed away.
Mr. Pilson’s personal and professional background was always distinguished by the highest standards of honor and integrity. His work of many years in benefit of ASIPI and in general, of the Intellectual Property field will always be highly acknowledged.
We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, his legacy will always remain among us
