ASIPI at the 35th Annual Conference of ECTA
ASIPI attended the 35th Annual Conference of ECTA, held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, from 22 to 25 June 2016. On this occasion, the Association was represented by its President, Maria del Pilar
Troncoso, who had the opportunity to talk with Ruta Olmane, new elected President of ECTA, as well as other members of the new Management Committee.

Round Table Discussion in Venezuela: 10 years since the withdrawal of the Cartagena Agreement
The Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property (ASIPI), the Venezuelan Association of Agents of Industrial Property (COVAPI) and the International Trademark Association (INTA) met on June 14, 2016 at the Hotel Tamanaco Intercontinental in Caracas, Venezuela, to conduct a round table discussion on "Public Policies on Industrial Property: 10 years since the withdrawal of the Cartagena Agreement, where are we and which is the path to be followed?"

ASIPI participates in the first Latin America Regional Brand Protection Summit
Rafael Covarrubias, Second Vice President of ASIPI, attended the first IACC-UL Latin America
Regional Brand Protection Summit, organized by the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition (IACC), which took place from June 22-23 in Miami, Florida.
The summit was developed with the goal of promoting regional cooperation in the fight against counterfeiting and piracy. Sessions were held with delegates from governments of Latin American countries, discussing aspects of their nations in terms of policies and enforcement of laws related to Intellectual Property.

Round Table on “Cancellation by lack of Use” in Santa Cruz de la Sierra
On June 29 in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia), took place the replica of the Round Table on Cancellation by lack of Use, which had been held in the city of La Paz on 29 April.
The speakers were: Pilar Salazar form the firm Aguirre Sociedad Civil, who specifically addressed the procedure of cancellation for non-use, and the use and abuse in Bolivia; Wolfgang Ohnes from Orpan Sociedad Civil, who addressed the legitimate interest in the action of cancellation; and Edwin Urquidi from the firm Urquidi Rojas, under the moderation of Martha Landivar as Delegate of ASIPI.
This event, like the one that took place in La Paz, had the logistical and organizational support
of the Bolivian-German Chamber and it wa sponsored by the firms: Teresa Sheppard, Aguirre Civil Sociedad Civil, Orpan Sociedad Civil, Urquidi Rojas and Landivar & Landivar.

Workshop on Comparative Systems of Oppositions in Buenos Aires
On July 7 took place ASIPI’s Workshop on Comparative Systems of Oppositions in Buenos Aires, which was attended by 35 people in the auditorium of the Argentinian Association of Industrial Property Agents (AAAPI).
It was a great academic event, not only for the interest of the participants, but for the gathering of information carried out by the speakers about the systems of oppositions in South America and the special case of Mexico, which as of September incorporates the system of oppositions to its registration procedure.

ASIPI at the visit of the Intellectual Property Office of Guangdong to the IMPI
ASIPI, represented by our Delegate of Mexico Laura Collada, was present last June 27 in the official visit of the Intellectual Property Office of Guangdong, China to the offices of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI).
Mr. Mike Margain, Director General of IMPI, chaired the meeting which was also attended by officials of the Institute, as well as representatives of INDAUTOR, UEIDAPPI, SNICS, Customs, and form the private sector such as AMPPI, ICC, Motion Picture.
Mr. Ma Xiamin, Director General of the Intellectual Property Office of Guangdong, explained the programs that they are devolping.
Laura Collada made a brief presentation about ASIPI, its objectives, its structure, among others, and extended an invitation to attend events organized by the Association.
ASIPI will continue making presence and publicizing the work done for half a century in favor of the Intellectual Property.

About the second ASIPI Webinar
The second ASIPI Webinar was held on June 28.
On this opportunity the topic addressed was the "Intellectual Property in the Soccer Business"
and the speakers were Anna Guix, In-house of FC Barcelona, and Lorenzo Litta, partner of the
firm Societa Italiana Brevetti and current president of the ASIPI Committee of Sports Law.
The exposition was conducted jointly and alternately by the two speakers, and illustrated with a detailed powerpoint with information and illustrative images.
Topics related to protection strategies, internal proceedings of institutions for the protection of IP rights, specific problems of soccer and the sports field, counterfeits and imitations of products, merchandising and licensing, protection of sponsors and of the licensable properties, and ambush marketing.
After 1 hour, a space for questions was opened, which lasted nearly half an hour as speakers responded generously and with great detail each one.
It was another great experience for this type of formats for professional development, and we will do it again soon.

"The name ‘Coffee Valdesia’ was registered by the European Commission on June 26th, being duly inscribed in the Register of Protected Designations of Origin according to the requirements of the European Regulation No.1151/2012 on Rules of Quality for Agricultural and Food Products. It seeks to differentiate and offer protection to coffee (Arabic - in its typica and caturra varieties) native of the coffee-growing areas of the provinces of San José de Ocoa, Peravia and San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic, which are located between 600 and 1,300 meters above sea level.
Originally, the registration process of “Coffee Valdesia” in the National Office of Industrial Property (ONAPI) of the Dominican Republic concluded in July 2010, constituting at the time the first registration of a Designation of Origin in the country in view of the provisions of Law 20-00 on Industrial Property."

2. Tessy Barbat informed us that on April 4th, 2016, was accepted the Geographical Indication ALCAUCILES PLATENSES, from the city of La Plata -Prov. of Buenos Aires- and the isologotype copied below.
The request by producers to obtain the I.G. began more than six years ago.
The Minister of Agroindustry of the Prov. of Buenos Aires, Mr. Leonardo Sarquís said that "32 percent of the vegetables in the country are produced in the Prov. Of Buenos Aires, excluding potato production. It is a very strong impact and in the case of artichoke, it implies excellent perspectives for the sector. "
Mr. Sarquís recalled that "in Argentina, the artichoke cultivated area is approximately 1,750 hectares, of which 900 are in La Plata, at the same time, concentrates 97 percent of the total of Buenos Aires".
