KIRIBATI UNVEILS UPDATED PLAN TO MANAGE CLIMATE CHANGE AND DISASTER RISK AT CLIMATE WEEK
The Government of the Republic of Kiribati launched the revised Kiribati Joint Implementation Plan for Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management (KJIP) for 2019-2028 at Climate Week in New York City, during a side-event convened by the United Nations to review progress made on the Small Island Developing States Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway. WEBINAR | LINKING NATIONAL AND SUB-NATIONAL ADAPTATION: VERTICAL INTEGRATION IN NAP PROCESSES
To be effective, NAP processes must reflect local and sub-national dimensions of planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating adaptation. On September 18, the Network Secretariat co-hosted a webinar with the NAP Global Support Programme looking at different aspects of vertical integration in NAP processes. BLOG: MALAWI GEARS UP FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION
Climate change has serious implications for economic development, food security and poverty eradication. NETWORK SECRETARIAT IN ACTION
- The NAP Global Network Secretariat was in New York for Climate Week 2019 to participate in a number of events, including Building a Resilient Future where we co-organized a panel on the climate change, adaptation and conflict nexus. Later in the week, we supported the launch of the revised KJIP.
- The Secretariat was also in Botswana for a workshop where key government stakeholders adopted 16 recommendations toward their NAP Framework.
- The Government of Fiji and the NAP Global Network co-hosted an awareness-raising workshop in Lautoka, in Fiji’s Western Division, as part of ongoing communications under the Fijian NAP process.
- In Sierra Leone, the Environmental Protection Agency of Sierra Leone hosted a workshop, with the support of the NAP Global Network, for parliamentarians to build support for a coordinated approach to the country’s NAP process.
- Colombia officially launched the communications strategy for their NAP, which was supported by the Secretariat.
- We participated in a webinar hosted by LEDS-LAC, “Adaptation in Nationally Determined Contributions: Approaches to increase ambition,” where we spoke on regional advances in climate change adaptation.
NAPS IN THE NEWS
- The Global Commission on Adaptation launched their global call to #AdaptOurWorld. Read their report, which calls for a revolution in adaptation planning.
- Marshall Islands President Hilda Heine drew attention to their NAP during remarks at the United Nations General Assembly.
- Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, and Frank Bainimarama, Prime Minister of Fiji, highlighted their countries’ NAPs among the innovative approaches small island states like theirs are taking to address climate change.
- All 47 Least Developed Countries committed to strengthening their NAPs by 2020 during the UN Climate Summit.
- Bhutan is working on their NAP, focusing on climate impacts in the water sector.
