Buds and Blooms

The weather is warming, the birds are alive with song, and I anticipate spring will bring new inspiration to all of you whether you are a writer or a reader.

Winter kept me busy with exciting manuscripts to edit. Cozies, Westerns, Mysteries, and Fantasies filled my calendar. I’ve met delightful new authors and enjoyed working with returning authors on their new projects. The stay-at-home atmosphere brought about by the virus produced new works by authors that will leave you with hours of reading and enjoyment.

After a winter of being inside, I look forward to going places and getting back on the walking trails. But I am kinda used to delivery services and not sure when I'll go into an actual store again. This month, my backyard is getting a makeover and a fresh garden. I wish I could have you all over for a backyard picnic. That would make my steps springier. Let’s March into spring together.

Manuscript Tip

Before you send out a sample to editors, here are a few items to take care of that may reduce the quoted fee:
  • Use Select All, highlight your entire manuscript, and format your paragraph spacing to double or 1.5, with paragraph indents at .3 or .5.
  • Then use Find/Replace to remove all tab indents. Tabs are evil.
  • Use Select All to highlight your entire manuscript, then Tools, then Language, and make sure your language preference is selected and uncheck Do Not Check Spelling or Grammar.
  • Run spell-check.
  • Use Find/Replace feature to find all double spaces and replace with single spaces.
  • Remove extra spaces after and before paragraph marks by searching for “space¶” and replacing with “¶”.
  • Use Times New Roman or similar serif font. This ensures straight quote marks are easily found and replaced with curly quote marks.
  • Use Find/Replace to change straight quotes to curly quotes.
  • Use Find/Replace to change straight apostrophes to curly apostrophes.
  • Attach ellipses to the word preceding so that the ellipses don't dangle at the end of a line and onto the next on Kindle formatting.  Example: The cookies… are gone. Not: The cookies are … gone.
The next issue will cover what to do with towards, too, and a few other items to add to your checklist to get that sample quote down a bit.
Do I have your book cover on my completed project list? Let me know if you'd like it added with a link to your author page.
Reader Tip

If you're looking for a print book on Amazon, the first button price you see may not be the best price. Click on others and look for the actual print book by the publisher or the one that ships and is fulfilled by Amazon because that is usually the one the publisher has published with Amazon.

Also, you can go directly to a publisher's site and buy the book directly.

Read on and enjoy.
