Alabama Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers Homepage Connect With Us:
from Rod Turochy, ALSITE President
Happy new year (although it’s already two months in)! I’m looking forward to serving as your ALSITE President this year. At this point, I have already learned that it takes a team effort by your elected Board members to make sure everything that is supposed to happen actually does. That said, I also now have a deeper appreciation of the efforts put in by last year’s President, Jeff Stephenson, to lead our organization and ensure that nothing fell through the cracks.
Taking the team theme even further – you are a player on the ALSITE team! Your interest in serving the organization through committee work, serving as an officer, volunteering in a service project, or simply attending our meetings demonstrate this. If you would like to figure out how you can take on a bigger role on the team just let any of the officers know. The help will be appreciated.
I hope to see you at the spring meeting on Thursday, March 10, at the 4-H Center on Lay Lake near Columbiana. The meeting will provide an opportunity for us to gather and learn from each other in a beautiful setting. Unfortunately, due to a scheduling conflict, the student traffic bowl competition will not be held at the conclusion of the meeting but instead the day before (Wednesday, March 9) at noon. Sain Associates has graciously offered to allow us to use meeting space in their Birmingham office to hold the competition.
Other upcoming events include the Southern District ITE Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 10-13. Come along for the ride to Music City and cheer the winning Alabama Section traffic bowl team against others from across the Southern District. We will return to the Beach Club in Gulf Shores on June 8-10 for our annual meeting.
Finally, I would like to ask you to think about things that we can do to increase the attractiveness of ALSITE to prospective new members, particularly students who have just graduated and transportation professionals in the first few years of their careers. Getting these folks interested in joining the ALSITE team is critical to the health and longevity of our organization. We need to ensure that we will have a steady stream of people to serve on committees, to organize activities, and simply to attend our meetings. I’ll see you there!

#URKEYS2DRV 2016 by Emily Clark, State Farm Insurance Public Affairs Specialist,
and Lauren Nickles, ALSITE Service Projects Chair
#URKEYS2DRV is the latest CRAZE with all the high school students! This event is sponsored by State Farm Insurance and includes a driving simulation, shared real life stories from tragic experiences, and trivia quizzes to make sure the students know how to prevent vehicle crashes. A teen driving safety summit has been in place for years all over the state of Alabama. Just last year 545 students from 45 schools across the state were able to increase their knowledge in driver safety.
#URKEYS2DRV hosts Mike Lutzenkirchen, father of late Auburn football player Philip Lutzenkirchen, as he shares his story of his son’s death. Mike is a powerful, moving speaker that makes the kids think about how their actions may affect others.
At the events the students are able to engage with family members that have received “that” call in the middle of the night which told the sad story of a distracted driver killing their beloved son/daughter. The students are able to see how distracted driving affects the family after the victim’s passing. They are also able to experience driving simulation models while driving and texting or putting on make-up. The students really try their hardest not to make mistakes!
This year Mississippi will be joining in on the fun. This series is going to be called Club Officer Training in order to continue their driver safety program name.
If you would like to volunteer for one of these events please contact Lauren Nickles, firstname.lastname@example.org. Organization partners include: Children’s of Alabama, Alabama Department of Public Health, Alabama Department of Transportation and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
