This is the last ALSITE newsletter for 2016, and I hope this year has been a good one for you both personally and professionally. Although less than three months remains until 2017, there are several ALSITE activities coming up. Our fall meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 18, in Mobile. We will be meeting at a brand-new facility, GulfQuest, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico. This location also provides an opportunity for us to check out the neighborhood in which the 2018 Southern District ITE Annual Meeting will be held. ALSITE is the host organization for that meeting, which will be held exactly a year and a half away (April 8-11, 2018) at the Renaissance Mobile Riverview Plaza Hotel. This means we have work to do, and the Local Arrangements Committee (led by Jennifer White and Shane Bergin) is working hard to plan the meeting and will soon need to identify volunteers to fill the wide range of roles it takes to host to SDITE Annual Meeting.
Another item that is a key part of ALSITE’s service work is the upcoming teen driving summits (#URKEYS2DRV) sponsored by State Farm Insurance. These action-packed events for high school students will be held in Bessemer on October 20, Montgomery on October 27, and Florence on November 2. See the feature later in this newsletter for more information and how to help. I had the pleasure of coordinating ALSITE’s participation in one of these summits in Auburn last year and was impressed by how well put together it was!
Finally, it has been an honor to serve you as the President of ALSITE over the last year. I appreciate all the time and energy that everyone gives to our organization, and to our profession. I think there are few lines of work in which the product is so visible, so routinely used, and maybe even taken for granted by so much of the population. The importance of providing a safe and efficient transportation system to our quality of life cannot be overstated. Thanks for all you do to ensure this.

#URKEYS2DRV ALABAMA TEEN DRIVER SUMMIT by Jeff Stephenson, ALSITE Past President
#urkeys2drv is a teen driver summit held at various times of the year in the state of Alabama. It is an interactive educational day for many high school students all across the state. Keynote speaker Mike Lutzenkirchen will share his personal story of his son Philip, a former Auburn football player who died at the age of 23 in a car crash. Mike is great at connecting with the students at these events, and his talk is very informative for both students and adults. Breakout sessions will discuss topics such as the Graduated Driver License Law, drinking and driving, texting while driving, and much more. There will also be fun and interactive activities such as driving simulators and a photo booth.
The #urkeys2drv program started in 2015 under the leadership of State Farm and Children’s Hospital. There were four events in 2015 attended by a total of nearly 450 students from 45 schools in 26 different counties in Alabama. It is our hope that these students are applying the knowledge they obtained from these events, and sharing these messages with their schools and their communities.
Three #urkeys2drv events are planned for 2016. The events generally start around 8:00am and end early in the afternoon. Lunch is provided to all attendees and volunteers. Below is the event schedule for 2016:
Thursday, October 20, 2016 | Watermark Place, Bessemer, AL
Thursday, October 27, 2016 | Embassy Suites, Montgomery, AL
Wednesday, November 2, 2016 | Marriott Shoals, Florence, AL
ALSITE has traditionally provided several volunteers at teen driver summits over the years. Several volunteers are needed to serve at each of these events. This is a good opportunity for our ITE student chapters to participate in a service project as well.
If you are interested in volunteering at one of the events, please contact Jeff Stephenson at 205-263-2172 or email@example.com.
