Volume XLVI - Issue 2 - Summer 2016
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
from Rod Turochy, ALSITE President

It’s hard to believe that the ALSITE annual meeting is just around the corner (June 8-10 at the Beach Club in Gulf Shores).  I hope you will attend the meeting – you can count on fun, fellowship, and learning opportunities.  The general format of the meeting is the same as in past years, and the revamped and streamlined format of the auction that benefits HMRALSITE Scholarships – that’s our scholarship program – went so well last year we decided to do it again.

It has been a busy time for ALSITE.  In March, we held our meeting at the 4-H center near Columbiana, and the Auburn University Student Chapter team won the Alabama Section traffic bowl competition.  We had a strong contingent at the SDITE Annual Meeting in Nashville in April.  I’m happy to report that – for the 7th consecutive year – ALSITE won the Outstanding Section Award among the smaller sections in ITE’s Southern District.  The HMRALSITE Scholarships Foundation once again has awarded scholarships to two undergraduate students studying transportation engineering in the state.  Read the articles in this newsletter for more!

On a sad note, since our last meeting and newsletter, ALSITE mourns the passing of David Griffin on March 29.  David was a long-time active member of ALSITE and served as President in 1988-1989.  David also served as Treasurer for HMR ALSITE Scholarships for many years.  He had worked for the City of Tuscaloosa for over 34 years, most recently as City Engineer.

Planning ahead – our fall meeting will be held in the Mobile area in October – the date and location will be finalized soon.  Planning really far ahead – the SDITE Annual Meeting comes to Alabama in 2018 on April 7-11 at the Renaissance Mobile Riverview Plaza Hotel.  Over the next several months, the local arrangements team (Jennifer White and Shane Bergin) will be looking for the volunteers needed to pull off this big event in which we will host a few hundred folks.

See you in Gulf Shores!

RECAP OF THE 2016 SDITE MEETING
Becky Malenke, our SDITE representative, keeps us up to date with the latest news!

ALSITE members had a great time at the SDITE Meeting in April!  The meeting was held April 10th - 13th at the Downtown Sheraton in Nashville, TN.  Attendance included the entire ALSITE Board of Directors, numerous members and affiliates, and two of our younger members, Luana Ozelim and Timothy Bunger, who were awarded SDITE scholarships to attend the meeting.

The theme of this year’s meeting was “Cityfication! Transportation in Town & Country”.  Prior to the meeting, a golf tournament was held at the Hermitage Golf Course and several ALSITE members showed off their skills.  The opening session keynote speaker was David Plazas, Opinion Engagement Editor of the Tennessean’s editorial board.  He spoke about traffic and transportation issues from the media perspective.  At the Section Roll Call, ALSITE President Rod Turochy gave the first official invitation to the 2018 SDITE Meeting that ALSITE will host in Mobile.  While Rod shared interesting facts about Mobile, the rest of the ALSITE delegation threw MoonPies into the crowd.

Technical sessions covered a variety of topics including pedestrian crossings, signal timing, traffic forecasting, roadway operations, alternative intersection designs, freight management, driverless vehicles, flashing yellow lights, road diets, access management, and parking.  SDITE also offered two special sessions on communication skills training, and participants had the opportunity to join several technical tours.

The ABD Party was held at the Wildhorse Saloon on Monday evening.  The event began with a BBQ buffet and ended with line dancing.  Participants donned their country attire and enjoyed socializing with ITE members from other sections.  As usual, ALSITE was well represented in the Traffic Bowl.  Jim Stewart served as emcee in Tommy Lee’s absence, while Richard Caudle and James Foster operated the equipment.  A team from Auburn University participated in the Traffic Bowl.  Unfortunately, they did not advance past the first round, but ALSITE is still proud of their efforts!

Alabama was once again honored with awards!  ALSITE received the 2015 Outstanding Section in Group II for the 7th year in a row!  In addition, Becky White was presented the Marble J. Hensley Outstanding Individual Activity Award.  Congratulations to Becky on this well-deserved recognition!

ALSITE is only two years away from hosting this meeting in Alabama!  Please make plans to be at the Renaissance Mobile Riverview Plaza Hotel from April 7-11, 2018.  Everyone is needed to pull off a successful meeting!
