Strengthening Global Climate Finance Readiness Community of Practice: National Coordinators’ Retreat

The UN Environment/UNDP/WRI GCF Readiness Programme brought together national coordinators from all nine participating countries with the global coordination teams for UNDP and UN Environment for a three-day retreat in Paris in February 2017 to share experiences, significant milestones, best practices and challenges in order to learn from each other and reinforce a small but far-reaching community of practice on climate finance readiness.
Fiji agrees on National Climate Fund roadmap

For island nations like Fiji, the threat of climate change is far from theoretical. Like many other Pacific countries, Fiji is already feeling its damaging effects in the form of extreme weather, droughts and sea-level rise. It has affected every sector of Fiji’s economy, and impacts negatively on the country’s resilience to disasters and access to natural resources. In order to protect its citizens from further climate-related risks and disasters, the Government of Fiji is leading the way in developing national strategies to mobilise the resources vitally needed to tackle climate change. MORE
Nepal Technical Committee meets to agree on climate change priorities

In Pokhara, west of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, the Himalayas rise majestically from the freshwater Phewa Lake. But this beauty also belies a sad truth: due to climate change, the glaciers on this, the world’s most recognised mountain range, are melting. It was with this conspicuous reminder as a backdrop that Nepal’s Ministry of Finance brought together a technical committee in Pokhara in February to review and select priority climate change projects to be submitted to the Green Climate Fund for approval and funding. MORE
Benin takes a holistic approach to addressing climate change

There is no simple solution for addressing climate change; it requires a multidimensional approach that includes systemic law and policy change as much as it needs education, behaviour change and grassroots adaptation and mitigation action. Demonstrating its understanding of this, as well as its commitment to lessening the impacts of climate change on its environment and its citizens, the Government of Benin is combining a top-down and bottom-up approach in its national strategy to tackle the threat.

Pacific countries take the driving seat on climate finance with nationally-owned funds

Sea level rises, warming ocean temperatures and extreme weather events such as cyclones are well documented effects of climate change, and nowhere are they felt more strongly than in island nations. For years, these governments’ appetite for nationally-owned climate funds has increased to address this colossal threat, as they allow countries to collect finance from a variety of sources, coordinate them, blend them together and account for them to deliver adaptation and mitigation results on the ground.
