Model Farm

building bridges out of poverty using small farm agriculture
2016 #3 - from Nicaragua
We find helping the poor in Latin America through small-farm agriculture very interesting and hope you do too.
Pontis Grows In Nicaragua
In 2009 Sergio came to Nueva Esperanza as one of the very poor families in an Agros development program.  In 2010, with his sister Consuela, he moved into the new house (#4) they helped build.  Over the past year Sergio has been studying to be a trainer in the Pontis Sustainable Agriculture Program.  In June we were able to do just that and hired Sergio part time.  WELCOME TO THE TEAM, SERGIO!

Sergio is an example of how hard-working people not only rise out of poverty but gain new opportunities in the Pontis program.  With your support, we will keep building bridges in Latin America.
Pontis factoid:  As a member of Poverty Cure (, Pontis Nicaragua is committed to developing local economies and markets.  We strive to buy local and hire local.  The excellent documentary Poverty Inc. details how importing aid causes both short- and long-term harm.  We highly recommend watching this on Amazon or Netflix.
Well, Irrigation and Water Team
We received a great response to our need for a well at the Pontis Veracruz Model Farm.  In fact, we have started looking at the resources God has provided and are working to create a team that can drill wells, install drip irrigation and help with water on farms.  We have access to some drilling equipment and are looking at how we can structure this as a small business that provides 3-5 local jobs.  Their work can prepare small farms to thrive in spite of future droughts like we had these past three years.

This is a great example of how your support can not only address a need but actually create a local business or process to address that need for more farm families in the future.

We look forward to telling more about this exciting project over the coming months.  We constantly remind ourselves that neither Latin America nor God are necessarily prone to follow our best laid plans exactly.  So, as the story develops, we will keep you informed.

The Pontis Story
Soria, with the tape measure, is learning to design her farm to match the terrain in a Pontis class.  She, like you and me, are part of The Pontis Story.  We wrote it down and thought you might like to take a look or share it with a friend.

Thank you for joining us in walking with and sharing the burden.

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and “you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”                    Jesus Christ, Matt 11:28-29
