a feeling of fellowship with others as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals.

Community ... In Service

The last full week of July we received a small team from Grace Chinese Christian Church in Fayetteville, AR. The "mission" of this team was to present the gospel to the children of La Escuelita through 5 straight days of special afternoon classes utilizing the curriculum of ROAR! VBS.

We received so many blessings during that week...

  • focused service and quality time of worship  and learning for the LaE students and staff
  • near perfect attendance for our LaE students
  • a precious opportunity for "community" for the in-country staff of LaE and the visiting team of missionaries
  • excellent preparation and supplies provided by the GCCC team
  • Incredible and encouraging family times of fellowship including an authentic Chinese meal prepared for our family that brought back many fond memories of our times at CWC (Christian Witness Center)
Most of all we sensed a true partnership in ministry, that together we all were bound by a common interest, mission and calling and therefore experienced "community" that refreshed our hearts, minds and souls.

“Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much” – Helen Keller.

Rains with this season are often torrential and generally fall in the afternoons. When this happens we sometimes have to cancel classes as the water is too high for the children to get to the property. During the week of ROAR!  we prayed that rain would fall in the evenings and would not hinder our afternoon sessions! Our prayers were answered and within an hour of the completion of our last class the skies opened up creating a full 3 hours of flooding in the streets and reminding us that the Lord had heard our prayers and held the rain!

Community ... In Family

We are aware of the rare blessing that we have in being an "extended family" on this mission field. Though we have scattered and new families are forming, there still is a great boost in coming together as "community" for one another.

One weekend last month we had all 3 daughters and their families at our table for a Saturday afternoon lunch. The table was FULL and there was much laughter and chatter. Suddenly Antony (Kristin's 4 year old foster son) exclaimed, smiling widely, "Look at all these friends here!!!" My eyes welled with tears of joy at the great gift of community and family that we can share with him and that he realized in that moment!

This month we welcomed Daniel and Emilee López back to Guatemala. Not only do they provide leadership for Lifting Kids, the organization that La Escuelita operates under but they also are an important part of our "family" here! We are so happy to have them around again after over a year away and their 2 littles provide great joy for us and companionship for Antony and Joshy! One evening the 4 were playing together in the living room and I was overcome with gratitude - here we were surrounded by "grandchildren" - each one of them bonuses - unexpected and undeserved additions to our family!

We also were delighted to welcome Dale's brother Mark and sister-in-law Natalie for their first visit to our Guatemala home! The Chans, the Barrundias and the Beyers all took opportunity to take some time off for rest and relaxation while sharing some of the beauties of God's creation that has become our home! With the visitors now gone our home feels empty but our hearts are full and encouraged!!!

Community ... In Learning and Discipleship

We recently combined our English and Spanish parenting classes, meeting together for a meal before diving into part 3 of the Parenting from the Tree of Life series. It is such a blessing and privilege to be involved in families' lives and hope that we can bring encouragement to lay firm foundations as well as form as sense of "community" among the students!!
Prayer needs as we move forward:
We will be traveling to Kentucky to attend Cross Training - the new missionary training with Cornerstone. We leave Guatemala on September 13 and return on September 30. Will you be in prayer for our study and reading time in preparation for that training as well as for our time there - that we will be challenged and encouraged, refreshed and inspired?  Also will you please pray for provision for Kristin and the boys in our absence?

Last newsletter we mentioned that we would be attending 2 fall trainings in the US however due to the fact that the foster boys are still in our home we do not feel like we can be away longer than the 2 weeks mentioned above, putting training #2 on hold until we have a better idea of the future with the boys. We appreciate your prayers for wisdom regarding all things travel, training and boys!! Thank you!
