Window Into Our World
Aug-Sept 2017     vol 5 issue 5

They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.  2 Peter 2:19

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Cor. 3:17

Last week we celebrated the Independence of Guatemala.  September 15 is the actual Independence Day but the celebrations went on all week long!!!  There were torch runs, sirens, whistles, horns honking, parades, concerts, school programs and so much more!  This year we became more than spectators and had opportunity to join in!  Oh, the fun!!!

Yet, as we were celebrating, the reality is that this country is in another season of political turmoil.  The cycle of corruption and allegations of corruption within the government seems to be an independence that cannot be achieved.  There are demonstrations, road closings and calls for the President to be removed from office.

And we are aware that the problems are not isolated to Guatemala!  There are many situations of unrest and distrust in the United States as well.  We hear reports of tensions and violent protests.

And we realize that apart from the Spirit of the Lord there is and never will be true freedom!!!    A quick word study on "freedom" in the New Testament reveals that the majority of verses speaking of freedom also speak of love for God and others.  Can you imagine what the news would be if each of us truly used our freedoms as opportunity to be in service to others, showing the love of Christ?!  Oh, that we would be OVERCOME with such a love for Christ that the world would undeniably see His love at work in and through us!!!

School Programs

Emily, on right, has been our friend from very near the start of our time in Guatemala.  She and her brother have been sponsored to attend a Christian school through "La Escuelita" this year.

The three young ladies all attend the after-school programs at "La Escuelita"
Torch Runs
above: Kristin and Anita were delighted to join the children and staff of Hogar de la Esperanza for an Independence Day activity that ended in a torch run complete with Ambulance escort and plenty of whistles!!

below: the following day we participated in the torch run with Angel and Emily's school.  Alyssa, Angel and Emily actually completed the entire "run" of almost 5 miles on foot!  The rest of us followed behind in the parade of horn blaring vehicles!
Seems as though we may need to have a regular "engagement corner" for our family newsletter!!  This issue we are delighted to announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of Kathlyn to Noé Chan.  A February 3, 2018 celebration in San Antonio Aguas Calientes is planned.  Noé is from Xepocol, Quiché, Guatemala and works as a physical therapist with Health Talents International.

  • The Lord provided a new (to us) vehicle in trade for our pick-up.  We are finding our lives to be more about moving people than things so the Chevy Trailblazer is a real blessing and finally we can all pile in and travel together relatively comfortably.
  • God has provided incredible advisers and counselors to our kids as they prepare to be married

Prayer Needs:
  • Details for our upcoming travels, specifically transportation during our stay
  • Those dealing with after effects of the recent hurricanes and earthquakes
  • Regan Beyer's final days of pregnancy and delivery
  • Kathlyn and Noé and Alyssa and Luis as they make plans
We are so thankful for the team of support that the Lord has given us in each of you!!!  We hope for opportunity to connect with many of you in the near future!  May we all surrender our freedoms to His Spirit's leading and control and live as blessings in these difficult days!

We are................
by His grace and for His glory,
